What did the Reich Wirtschaftlich Ministerium [correct: Reichwirtschaftsministerium] do in the 1920's & 30's? Was it involved in the secret rebuilding of German armed forces?

Reason: Correct is Reichwirtschaftsministerium - not Reich Wirtschaftlich Ministerium. Please use in case of need a dictionary

The RWM was responsible for the administration of the economy. In the Weimar Republic, its main impact in the real economy was through its control of tariffs and the like. Since it functioned as the Federal Treasury, the RWM probably had knowledge of some covert programs of the Reichswehr but, due to the limited nature of the latter, it did not have much to do with actual rearmament.

After Hitler took power, there was considerable turbulence at the RWM, until Hjalmar Schacht assumed as Minister. From then on, the RWM was heavily involved in the rearmament effort, initially in a leading role and then, from 1936 on. in a progressively administrative role. This was confirmed as Schacht resigned and upon the assumption of the new minister in Feb 38. During the war, the RWM was progressively sidelined ot deal with the civilian economy only.
