I wonder how often those were painted on for a news or propaganda photo vs a accurate count?

Hard to say!Most likely kill rings on the flak guns barrels are for all battery score.

I found another image of a 2.5cm Flak Hotchkiss (I supposed a Mle 1939) in german service.
