Thanks for your image, AGDE.

Based on your picture I think I can say that the weapon of my photos posted on 01 Jan 2011 is a 17cm K18, as you can see two small wheels at the bottom of the barrel, which is not seen in the 21 cm Mrs 18.

Here is an impression of them being in action:

Hi all,

A 21cm Mrs 18 howitzer (or a 17cm K18 gun. It's hard to say) abandoned in Tunisia, 1943

Hi all,

Another image from Ebay:

I have a question about the method of rotation of the howitzer:

This howitzer was capable of rotating 360 degrees rotating on its front lower circular platform. However, the rear of the gun carriage was supported on a rectangular platform. How then could turn the carriage if his rear part was already resting on the floor on his rectangular rear platform? :? :?

Hi all,

Nobody can explain me how could this weapon traverse in firing field position? :?

On the other hand, I have seen many pictures of 21cm Mrs18 or 17cm K18 in coastal position with a rail and a traverse mechanism on his rear.
Are these standard elements of these weapons or improvisations of their crews? :?

Thanks in advance. Sturm78

The carriage was supported by two baseplates, as you already noticed - the main, circular baseplate, on which it was rested by means of a pivot and the rear rectangular baseplate with the traversing gear. The whole carriage was simply rotating on the main baseplate, adjusted by the traversing gear in the 16 degrees range.
When direction of fire had to be radically changed, the rear baseplate was raised from the ground and the whole gun could be freely traversed by hand in any direction (360 deg. range), supported by two rollers riding at the edge of the main baseplate. Then the rear baseplate was lowered and the gun was anchored again in the new direction.
