Hi jean,

The R502 Nr 183 has been demolished for sure (aanneming Pattyn 1957). You can see also on the air picture that the flanking wall are straight in line with the front of the bunker; the ones of the R502 your picture are inclined.
There were in total 6 x R502's inside the Stp von Rundstedt: 1 in the ex-Stp Theodor (that is the Nr 183), 2 x inside the ex-Stp Albatros (Flugmeldkomp.) and 3 x inside the new position of the HKB 2./826.
You have also one R502 built inside the Stp Schlieffen more to the west.
The one of Stp Schlieffen had for sure inclined flanking walls, for the 5 other ones of the Stp von Rundstedt, I need to check my archives before i can give an answer.

Hi bunkermann
Notice that the man's legs are slightly bent, keeping in mind the average lenght of a male (+/- 174 cm) and keeping in mind he's legs are bent the overall lengt of the man as shown in the photo should be about 150 cm. Also keeping in mind the spacing between the climbingirons, which should be about 20 to 25c, the thickness of the roof is in fact 2metres. Have to admit, I was fooled too at first by it's proportions, thinking it was a much bigger bunker.

Hi Pierrot
The reason I linked the photo of the 502 with the position shown on your aerial is because of the possible chimney showing in the background which could have belonged to the 134 standing in front of it. Also even more in the background to the right you can see a shape resembling a house (notice possible roof, windows- and dooropenings), which also made me think it had to be near the aglomeration. But indeed, when looking closely at the aerial the flanking wall appears to be straight.

Hi again
I'm still rather convinced it was the regular 2m roof...

Hi Alex...
I know also a thought of mine... perhaps the doorways were about 80cm?? My square is only a guess based upon the lenght of the person on the ladder. But notice when compared to the red squares this person would measure up to more then 2 metres when standing upright. Must be something in between then...

Nope, the roof end sabout at the third red quare. Assuming the doorway is 60cm > 3x60=180cm +/-200cm thick.

The sitting man is away from the edge on the roof so the fourth red square isn't correct.
Keep in mind that due to to "dirt rim" the actual roof is about 25cm lower then the (round) edge we see.
Thanks,

Wim

The doorway of a 502 is 80cm.
And the ridge on top to keep the sand on the roof is mostly 25 to 30cm.
So Alex is right!
The roof is about 3 metres thick.
This means that at least the roof was reinforced by 50%, they could do this when a bunker was more prone to be targeted by high velocity rounds like heavy Flak and Pak.
Most of the time the walls were thickened because these weapons had a flat trajectory and normally could not fire from above when a bunker was build in a flat land like polders.
Maybe the roof was thickened becaus of higher risk of heavy bombardments.
Greetings Jack.

Hmmm, 3x80cm = 240cm so +/- 250cm

The photo angle makes it impossible to determine the distance of the second man to the edge. So the fourth top square (80x80) isn't correct.
Thanks,

Wim

hi jean, how about other bunkers? Are there drawings of those?
Here in holland the steel beam above the entrance is the ceiling, in belgium there is 25 cm difference?
The cutted edge is at 2 meter roofs about 80 to 100 centimeter, this one is much bigger.

I'm convinced the roof is more than 2 meters!
Nothing in baufortschrittsmeldung?
