Flak Tower ammunition elevators

:milwink: Where these devices used on all the armed towers? I've gathered a few photos but little info about them. Some more photos or info regarding weight and dimensions would be appreciated.

Why in steel and not in concrete? Seems a lot waste of resources. Very interesting though.
Perhaps they used the same elevator system used in large battleship turrets?

Hello Francisco

According to the book "Flaktürme" only the flak towers at Tiergarten , Friederichshain and Humboldshain
recieved this elevator system , the other had the same ammo hoist as on ships. The large ammunition rooms
of the flak towers were on ground level . Sorry no other information on the hoists .

I was asking about having been place on other locations because this one seems to be different from the other two types (notice the side door). Unfortunately I do not know the provenience of this photo.

I presume that the cast roofs were the best option, if they were to be built in concrete they would become to broad and to high.
On the roofs the space is limited and you can not build to high because of the 360 degree range.
The bunkers were pretty thick and if the roofs were not to be weakened by the limited space when building in concrete.
So if we look at the best option it is steel castings, it is expensive and time consuming to make them but for war the Germans took that for granted.
Is it possible that they could stil be seen on the bunkers?
It would really be an impressive sight!
Greetings Jack.

Why in steel and not in concrete? Seems a lot waste of resources.
The same thickness of steel gives 10 times as much protection as concrete.

Ok, here is my attempt at building a 3D model of the said ammunition lifts using Google Sketchup. I judged the height through the photo that shows the men opening the door. It seems to me that the door height is around 170 to 180cm...

Looks good.
I would although rotate them 90 degrees. The door opening points towards the centre of the tower and when the door is open you should have a unblocked passageway to the gun. This means you must have left and right models.
Thanks,

Good eye, thank you. Although the plans show them as they are in the drawing, the photos clearly show what you say.

Unless you have original construction plans. I would not trust any drawing 100%.

I found a nice video on youtube showing the interior of the Humboldthain, particularly the massive elevator shafts:

Some more info on my blog, if you're interested in miniatures:
