After german wartime technical documents -3° is correct.
A different document gives the Z.F.20 E as optical sight for direct fire but I have never seen it on a 12,8 so far. :|
Do you mean 12,8 cm Flak 40 or 12,8 cm Flakzwilling 40?
I've never seen a socket for an optical sight on a Flakzwilling, while it is clearly present on the 12,8 cm Flak 40. I also think, layers were just sitting too low to see anything over the Flakturm parapet.

Hello gents,

I have recently returned from a short break in Germany. on the train just outside Hannover nordstadt I spotted what I can now assume were 2 luftshutz bunkers. I would appreciate if any one has any information/photos on these. I can only assume they were for the use of railway crews.

thanks in advance

Paul

Hi Grzesio,
I meant the single barreled. The zwilling = 0 /+87°.
Nice info, could you circle the socket for the Z.F.20E on a 12,8 cm Flak 40 pic ?

Here you are. The whole sight socket is market with the red circle, the red dot inside denotes the place where the actual ZF would be mounted. The red line marks the coupling between the sight and the elevation layer's Uebertragungsgeraet 37 receiver (as opposed to the 8,8 cm Flak L/56 and 10,5 cm Flak, there was apparently no separate mechanical indicator of elevation angle for direct fire).

Hi Grzesio,
Thanks for your educational message.
Indeed, I couldn't find it on my some pictures were the device is lacking. I have few docs about the Übertragungsgerät receiver mounted on the 12,8, I'll have a look to see weather a mechanical indicator is mentionned.

Gentlemen,

Firstly I will admit that the photo from Humboldthain (which I have not seen before) seem to suggest that negative elevation of the Flakzwilling was out of the question. And then again; it's hard to detect an angle of only -3 degrees at this close range. And another thing; was the Zoo Flakturm of a slightly different design, with the rampart being just a little lower?

As to aiming, is it conceivable that the rangefinder on the Leitturm could engage ground targets?

Bear in mind that if we end up with the conclusion that the Zoo tower was in fact not capable of hitting Russian tanks on the Molkte Brücke, we will - in all modesty - be re-writing history :D :D

Hello Dan,

Just found it, for the 12,8 cm Zw it's 0 to +87° according to the book "Die deutschen Geschütze". Given who were the autors and the fact that they let empty cases when they don't have the information, I would say that the figures are reliable.

Best regards

Arthur
