Both are interesting ideas. I have read that China has produced a series of purpose-made salute guns, and only these newest ones are well-known to public. So it is also possible that this is an early prototype salute gun.

However, if you look closely you can see that this gun has rifle lines in its barrel - I don't think this is needed by a purpose-made salute gun. So I still tend to think that this is a post-WW2 mountain gun design.

As for the Hungarian gun, it is almost sure that this is a salute/model gun - intended to imitate the appearance of Soviet 122mm howitzer but with a smooth barrel.

Mr Chen,

I thought about the rifled barrel too, you are right.
And you know many govts use regualr (usually historical, outdated) guns as salute guns. Brits use 25pdrs or 105mm light guns, NL uses Krupp 7 Veld or 25pdr, Thai still use their Bofors 75mm from before WW2. Naturally they have their regular barrels.
Also several countries have created their own salute guns, using cut down or shortened, real barrels. NL Navy for instance uses 40mm salute guns cut from Bofors 40mm barrels. Naturally these guns retain their grooves as well!

So a cut down WW2 era weapon on a small carriage could be possible, just as the Hungarian example shows us....

Any idea about this gun in Nice, France, destroyed during the fighting in late August 1944? It looks like it was mounted in a casemate.

Hi Emmanuel,

it looks like the frontal plate of the tank turret. It lies upside down, the part of the circle is a part of the turret ring. It could be PzKpfw 38(t) with its flat frontal armour, but the shape of the gun mechanisms looks strange (hard to say because of the small size of the image).
