WWII German Studies of Fortifications & Bunkers 1938-43 (Denkschriften über Landesbefestigung 1938-43)

During the WWII, the German Army General Staff wrote eight Denkschriften (studies) that documented the foreign fortifications systems attacked by German forces. Each document is an illustrated manual that includes numerous maps, sketches, and photographs. The studies are:

Denkschrift über die tschecho-slowakische Landesbefestigung,1941 (Czechoslovakian Fortifications)

Denkschrift über die polnische Landesbefestigung,1941 (Polish Fortifications)

Denkschrift über die belgische Landesbefestigung,1941 (Belgian Fortifications)

Denkschrift über die niederländische Landesbefestigung,1941 (Dutch Fortifications)

Denkschrift über die französische Landesbefestigung, 1941 (French Fortifications)

Denkschrift über die jugoslawische Landesbefestigung, 1942 (Yugoslavian Fortifications)

Denkschrift über die griechische Landesbefestigung,1942 (Greek Fortifications)

Denkschrift über die russische Landesbefestigung,1942 (Russian Fortifications)

Two other similar documents were also produced by the German Army High Command (Oberkommando des Heeres, or OKH) General der Pioniere und Festungen (Chief Engineer and Fortifications Officer):

Nachtrag zu den Denskschriften über die fremden Landesbefestigungen,1943 (Sevastopol, Finland, Tobruk, Malta, Gibraltar, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Manila, and Singapore)

Die Landesbefestigung Erfarhrung aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg,1943 (Experiences with Fortifications in the Second World War).

Digital History Archive has assembled all ten documents on a four DVD set. The collection is a compilation of 1,640 images made by the US National Archives from the captured WWII German Records. Price for the set is $29.99 (plus postage).

You can order by emailing to [email protected]

Here's an excellent new book by Simon Pocock: "Lost Landscapes (Paesaggi Perduti) Campania 1943. This is a bi-lingual (English/Italian) book published by Three Mice Books (http://www.threemicebooks.com) in December 2011 at a price of Euro 35.00. It is based on a series of British Army "ground checks" of Italian and German fortifications in the Campania region in 1943. The book reproduces numerous aerial reconaissance photos of the region, along with the reports by Royal Engineer teams that surveyed the strongpoints after they were captured in the 1943 fighting. The reports contain very interesting photos, drawings and architectural plans of the pillboxes, anti-aircraft gun pits, etc. The book is 328 pages long, with excellent photo reproduction. I found the book to be extremely interesting as there is not a lot of published material on Italian World War II tactical fortifications. Most of the illustrations show Italian-built stronpoints, though these were used by the German army during the 1943 Italian campaign.
