Hi Alain,
Thank you very much. Could you please send a scan of the "Non-Freya" in Hi-Res directly.

Hi,
When you do signals intillegence (Funkaufklärung) you find the frequency with enemy trafic, listen to and record it, translate it if in clear, dechiper it if in code and then translate. You also try to identify the callsign and subsequently the identity of the unit. In many cases it is also of interest to locate the transmitter. In order to do that you must take bearings from two or more locations. The equipment with the cabin and the antenna could have that function. I have been through Trenkle Funkstör and Funkpeil, but cannot find it. However some of the FuMB equipment designed to intercept radar signals had a similar configuration. Please see attachment. So this could be a FuMB, not illustrated by Trenkle, or some sort of radio D/F equipment. But usually the Wehrmacht used some version of the Adcock for this.

Hi,
Thanks to A.C. it is now possible to see some more details on the equipment. There seems to be windows in the cabin and the reflector has round corners.

Hello All

In the book "British Intelligence in the Second World War"
is stated that the German Airforce station at Urville-Haque
near Cherbourg was bombed on the night of 3-4 June , it had
not been identified as an intercept station , but was know to
be an important installation of a special character .

Hi Jos,
Thank you very much. We are approaching the issue from both ends, but there are still gaps in the middle.

3/4 June Signals Targets - Urville-Hague. 100 aircraft from Bomber Command (96 Lancasters and 4 Pathfinder Mosquitoes from 5 Group) attack and destroy the HQ of the German Signals Intelligence Service at Urville-Hague near Cherbourg. The attack was memorable for the completeness with which the whole installation was permanently destroyed. No Allied aircraft were lost. It later transpired that this was the Chief ‘Y’ Intelligence listening Station in Normandy.

This information is from the RAF site and the London Gazette , Regards Jos

Cherbourg/Urville-Hague. This station is now known to have been the headquarters of the German Signals Intelligence Service in North-Western France. The attack on this important W/T centre was made on 3/4th June by 99 aircraft dropping 570 tons of 'bombs. The results were remarkable, the centre of a very neat bomb pattern coinciding almost exactly with the centre of the target area. The photographic interpretation report may be quoted verbatim: ' " The station is completely useless. The site itself is rendered unsuitable for rebuilding the installation, without much effort being expended in levelling and filling in the craters." 112. The success of this last attack on the Headquarters of the German Air Force Signals Intelligence must have been a major catastrophe for the enemy, and it may well be that it was an important contributory factor to the lack of enemy air reaction to the assault.
