Re: Looking for photos of 7.5cm Pak 97/38 (f) AT gun
I have found another picture of the same gun (see the bent tubular trail) from ebay with a better view of the wheels. The wheels are indeed unusual as they have an extra width to support a wider rubber tire but with a band of a slightly smaller diameter (which would not contact the road), possibly for soft terrain (mud, sand)?Manuferey wrote:Here is a 7,5 cm Pak 97/38 with special wheels. The wheel in the back seems to have the standard pattern. However, the wheel in the front is unusual. Was it still another standard wheel or an ad-hoc mounting?
This detail is extracted from a photo that was taken at an ordnance supply depot in Cherbourg on August 7, 1944. Source: US Signal Corps - Archives de la Manche.

And here is another picture of a 7,5 cm Pak 97/38 gun with the same type of tire, taken in a collection point somewhere in southeastern Cherbourg peninsula. It does not seem to be the same gun (see the large thru-hole on the top left of the shield). The marking with the towing speed limit of 20 km/h can be also seen on 97/38 guns with the standard wheels so it is not particular to the wider wheels.

Re: Looking for photos of 7.5cm Pak 97/38 (f) AT gun
Hi Emmanuel,
Maybe the Paks with odd wheels are double tyred with slightly smaller diameter mud wheels bolted on normal wheels (occasionally also seen on Wehrmacht lorry front wheels). If so some modification to the normal wheels would have been necessary in this case since the bolt circles do not match but the grease cup visible could conceivably be the inner wheel's.

Thank you, Markus. It is very possible indeed that the 2nd tire ("tyre" in British English ) had its wheel bolted to the normal wheel.

Markus,
The 5-bolt pattern matches when comparing with a close-up picture of the wheel posted by Barovic on 20 Jan 2008 on page 1 of this thread :

Re: Looking for photos of 7.5cm Pak 97/38 (f) AT gun
You would say that on a paved road it does not do much, the outer wheel is smaller in diameter, maybe they were modified for bad roads.
The roads in Cotentin were more like farmersroads and these could be muddy and some parts of Cotentin are swampy.
Maybe some units came from Russia and took there own weapons (div.eigene), in Russia the roads in the autumn and spring were a nightmare (according of one of my friends that rhode by motorcycle from the Netherlands to Japan (Kawasaki factory) they still are...).
But which unit was that?

Thanks Emmanuel,
Thought the bolt circle on the disc wheels looked the bigger but that was just an optical illusion,

It would be interesting to find more pictures of such wheels and in Russia in particular if it was to overcome mud conditions.JKernwerk wrote:You would say that on a paved road it does not do much, the outer wheel is smaller in diameter, maybe they were modified for bad roads.

It could also make it easier to maneuver the gun in sandy terrain near the beach, but here again, we should be able to find similar wheels along the Atlantikwall.
And there should be similar wheels available for the 5 cm Pak 38.

Here is another picture of a 7,5 cm Pak 97/38 with the special wheels. Unfortunately, the location is unknown.
