Hi,

I think the box (2 on Jos's plan) is a large dust/debris filter and not a heat exchanger.

The filter box and its large shut-off valve are to take natural air directly to the air pump. If the gas filters were to be used then you would close the large valve and the air would then be pulled into the HES through the yellow pre-filter and the gas filters. I have seen photos of other examples where the valve and fliter box are located directly under the HES.

You never see this kind of set up in the C.I. (although the pipes emerging from the walls are present for such a system to be fitted) as a bakalite tube would be placed on to the HES for running with natural air but with the draw back that it would need to be removed and the gas filters attached unlike on the example above where you simply close the large shut-off valve and open the shut-off plug on the yellow pre-filter

BTW the FL 242's on Jersey have the same pipe for the large valve ect but they are blanked off.

Malcolm :milwink:

Hello All

Malcolm is right the stove had nothing to with the Lufter , on this drawing ( S 449 ) you can see the
air intake pipe has a split just as Malcolm told us in his mail . This conversion cost ( extra pipe ,
valve and dustfilter ), a lot more than the bakelite pipe that was places on the HES under non-gass attack
also there it looks that there is only one gasfilter i.s.o. two .

Drawing = BRV

Ok, I thought it was some sort of Warmwasserluftheizer. Why would they use this for a small bunker like a Fl 242..

hi guys, i can think of one good reason for this system:
a FL242 had to be combat ready in very short time.. (incoming tiefflieger)
maybe that's why they choose for the umgehungsleitung with schnellschlussklappe i.s.o. having to replace the bakelite zwischenstuck for the filter?
as said by malcolm only thing to do was close the schnellschlussklappe.

Hi Tim

My drawings are from the S 449 and not the Fl 242 , so I still think this is a early naval conversion .

The FL242 in Hanstholm has the same construction. We had a problem with knowing how to connect the pipes. Now we know... Thanks Jos !

Some more small things :-)
First the same picture as above, from MKB Fjell. Described as a Carl Zeiss TrG 8a submarine periscope. Is that correct ?

Lufter with Umgehungsleitung

#118

Post by jopaerya » 12 Apr 2012, 10:16

Hello All

Thanks to a discussion with Paul Dijkstra found a other model of the airfilter with a double pipe but this
one is placed not high in the room but under the filter . This model has also a dustfilter en quick shutter .

Mayby our new moderator ( test ) can combine this thread with the information about the airfilter in the
Thread Small Things ??
[I've merged two posts: Lufter with Umgehungsleitung into Small things.
Moderator's panels looks to me like riding bicycle when I was few yers old ;)
