Tobruk pit for FT-17 and APX-R turrets

#1

Post by Trevor Davenport » 17 Mar 2008, 19:50

Hi all.

Talking to SES about Tobruks for FT-17 (See 'Stencilling on bunker' topic) reminded me to ask if the attached layout in Tobruk pits for FT-17 and APX-R turrets is common.

We have only two on Alderney - the rest are conventional types.

Outside are gridded vent intakes that must connect to a 'ring tube' for natural ventilation; inside are ammunition recesses, a gunner stand, reached via an iron ladder, with used shell case slots leading down into a compartment below the gunner; the whole compartment acts like the inside of a tank.

One is for a FT-17 the other is for an APX-R turret.

Are these very common elswhere in the Atlantic Wall?

Hi,
NOW it is getting realy interesting. I'd better have a look to-morrow (5 klicks down the road), Fliegerhorst Grove is my back-yard or is it vice-versa?

Hi Trevor,

I have not seen the type you show in your photos locally (Jersey). Only conventional types of Tobruk.
I will see if 'The Islander' can answer as he has written a article on FT-17 & APX-R Tank turrets in Jersey for a future C.I.O.S. review 8-)

Had a look to-day. It is a Grove standard Tobruk (small crew room, 60 cm walls). The mounting ring is in place, the turret has been recovered by the local museum, but we found reamains of the ball-bearing ring and some loose balls.

Hi Jos
Yes, apparently they just sat on the steel bars. Do you see these recesses in other places?
