It looks like both types were installed facing Omaha Beach :

Hi Jos,

Comparing the two photos;
I note that AvB's photo showing the 'footprint' of the mounting point in the L 414A having the positions for 12 mounting bolts (but it looks like with only 4 bolts being fitted?).

Erik E's photo has a total of only 8 bolts 8O

Or was there diferent mountings for 5cm Kw.K's???

Malcolm

Hm... In all 5cm KwK emplacements I`ve seen (100+?) I`ve never seen anything else than these 8....Which leads me tho think that the L414A was not equipped with the same gun.(Unless it was made local like in Denmark?)

Attatched image shows the typical base for the Bh.SK L used with 5cm KwK:

Hallo

A list made 27/9-1942 states the following:

"Due to the loss of the transport D/S Karpfanger, the 5 cm KwK will be divided as follows:

Territorialbefehlshaber im Polarbereich = 140 Pcs
Territorialbefehlshaber Mittelnorwegen = 85 Pcs
Territorialbefehlshaber Südnorwegen = 80 Pcs
Territorialbefehlshaber der deutschen Truppen in Dänemark = 15 Pcs

The early date would indicate that all these were L/42, if rearming took place in the same period:
(Quote from http://www.achtungpanzer.com)
Originally, Ausf H was armed with 50mm KwK 38 L/42 gun and two MG 34 machine guns but in 1942/43, they were rearmed with 50mm KwK 39 L/60 gun.

Hello,

In Belgium both types of 5cm KWK (L42 and L60) were used on the Atlantikwall, even in the same sector.
Hereunder an extract of a gliederung of the 48 ID (KVA3) from april 1944 showing the amount of each type.

Greetings

Hello

Early 1944 the 5 cm K.w.K. L/42 in Gironde-Sud were exchanged for L/60 .
As you can read this also indicated that the sockel was reinforced ??

The 5cm KWK L42 was used in northern Denmark, Hirtshals, using a befelfslafette in concrete.
Either standing free or mounted in bauform 65a.
Some mounted in concrete near a R.655.

Well, beside the well-known Behelfssockellafette there were some other options to place a 5 cm KwK:

Sockellafette I for 5 cm KwK 39 L/60
Sockellafette Ia for 5 cm KwK 39/1 (8 bolts)
Sockellafette Ib for 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 (12 bolts)
Sockellafette Ic for 5 cm KwK 39 L/42 and L/60 (8 bolts)
Sockellafette Id for 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 (6 bolts)

This information comes from the article about "Leichte und mittlere Geschütze des Atlantikwalls" written by H. Jäger in Fortifikation 20/2006 based upon the "Auszug aus dem Baubefehl für den Atlantikwall vom 2. Januar 1943".
