Id. heavy artillery ammunition
Re: Id. heavy artillery ammunition
Personally, i think the US Marine is sitting on a US Navy 14" HC MK.19 shell.
It would be interesting to find out if there were any Navy Vessels with 14" guns involved in the battle at Iwo Jima.
@Sturm: i'll look into it, some of the shells are easily recogniseable, others require some work.
Best regards,
Zünder

Re: Id. heavy artillery ammunition
Thank you for your answers, Zünder and Carl, and sorry for delay.
I have a doubt with this picture: 21cm Mrs 18 or 17cm K18 shells. I can not identify the gun from this angle. Maybe the shells provide clues

Re: Id. heavy artillery ammunition
Really difficult to say, is this the only picture ?
Judging by the width of the protective cover over the drivingbands, i'd say 17 cm (21 cm covers were less wide).
But when you compare the height of the shell with the soldier standing next to it, the shell seems to be higher then 1 m, which would indicate 21 cm.
There are some cilinders standing on the left, but these could be either wicker carriers (which were used for both 17 cm and 21 cm) or 17 cm shellcase/powdercontainers.
So.., difficult to say from just this one picture.

Re: Id. heavy artillery ammunition
Dan is right, these pictures show ammunition for the 15 cm s.I.G. 33, the shell is a 15 cm I.Gr. 38 fitted with a s.Igr.Z. 23, shellcase seems to be the brass model 6303 (later models were made out of steel).

Re: Id. heavy artillery ammunition
Thank you very much for your help, Dan and Zünder.
According to the book "German artillery of WW2" of Ian Hogg the standard explosive shell for 15cm sIG33 gun is the 15cm I Gr.33 with s I Gr Z 23 fuze. The 15cm I Gr 38 Nb is the smoke shell, according to this source.
Is wrong this book?

Re: Id. heavy artillery ammunition
First picture shows 21 cm Granate 17 with a kz.Bd.Z. 10 fuze, this one was fired by the lg. 21 cm Mrs.
Second picture: shellcase seems to be for the 15 cm s.FH. 18, shell is most likely a 15 cm gr. 36 with a Dopp.Z. S/60 s fuze.

I found this curious image on Ebay showing artillery shells. I think they're shells of the 7.5cm leIG18 gun but I'm not sure.
Can anybody confirm it?
