The MG151 is still in use with the Portuguese Policia Aerea or Air Police (Airport defense units)

why on earth are modern spanish security forces using WWII german weapons? surely they could find a better replacement, like the m197 gatling gun or the oerlikon 20mm.

Hello

Why on earth invest money in something new - when the old guns are doing the job :)

Nato are also still using the SMG M62 a developement from the MG42 from WW2 - and this is also still very usefull.

It is not always any use to just buy new weapons - because they are on the market 8-)

Hi all, after a long time....of holidays. :D

I found on Ebay a great image of a naval 2cm Flak 38 on Sockellefette LC/30 (see the side cylinder) with a basket for cartridges.

I would like to contribute with some information how to distinguish
MG C/30, Flak 30 and Flak 38 on the pictures.
In my opinion, all these are different weapons with same
principle of functioning. As a matter of fact, the MG C/30 had shoulder rests attached to the rear of the gun body while Flak 30 and 38 used by Kriegsmarine had them attached to LC/30 mounting. Further, MG C/30 had an inclined cocking handle on the right side, Flak 30 a vertical cocking handle on the same place while Flak 38 was cocked by a T-shape handle at the rear of the gun body, connected to a chain. Cocking of this gun is visible on a photo posted by Sturm on 22 March 2009, 13:15.
The barrel of MG C/30 was plain while barrels of Flak 30 and Flak 38 had two corrugated areas to facilitate changing of barrel. By Flak 30, one of them was close to flash surpressor and another one close to gun body, by Flak 38 both were close to gun body. Of course, flash surpressors also looked different.
Another distinctive feature of early MG C/30 were two handles connected to the end piece of the gun and carring gun triggers ( for single shots on the right and for automatic fire on the left) . On Flak 30 there were small trigger blocks with trigger arms, instead . When rotated , they released the breech and the gun opened fire. The rotation was initiated by a flat rod connected by firing pedals by Army mounting. By naval mounting, a handle on the right side of the basis plate (carrying the gun) of LC/30 served same purpose and initiated automatic fire while for single shots, the gunner moved the the right-side trigger arm by hand. Flak 38 had only one trigger block with trigger arm and the switch on the left side made single-shot/automatic fire switching possible.
There is an LC/30 mouting (without gun) in a private military museum Roethenbach an der Pegnitz (near Nuernberg), Germany and (probably) Flak 38 in LC/30 in Military museum in Warsaw, Poland.

The gun on the picture posted by you on 23 Jan 2009 is definitely not Flak 38 because of shape of flash surpressor as well as of cocking handle. Its mounting is not LC/30 ( the axis of hand wheel seems to be higher over the basis
- probably just those ca 10 cms like it was in reality - than in L/C 30, there is lack of gun-carrying cradle typical for LC/30,the shoulder rests seem to be attached directly to the weapon - see their position on the shoulders of the gunner). So, it might well be ST 5 or ST52 by trials carried out by Army officers.
I have following experience with MG C/30 designation: When studying files of German Danube Fleet in BA- MA Freiburg, I found records confirming installation of MG C/30 on certain ship in June 1941. By incidence, I got few photos of this weapon on same ship from same period. The mounting was LC/30 while the outer look of the gun corresponded to Flak 30 up to details ( including vertical cocking handle). On the other hand, when same ship was re-armed in Linz in 1943 , the record spoke about Flak 38, not MG C/38.
Flak 30 seems to be further development of MG C/30 to suit the needs of the Army, but rather a "facelift" that a new weapon like Flak 38 was. It is hard to believe that Bismack would have carried original MG C/30 when better gun and better mounting ( from the point of view of compensation of ship´s rolling ) had been available for several years. So far as I know, German Navy lived its own life including weapon designation stadards and production orders. It might well be that they used further the designation MG C/30 for what was Flak 30 when ordered by the Army. As to 1943-story mentioned above: due to Danube warships were assigned to Army support role, it might well be that Army released some of their own supplies to these ships to get them re-armed fast in order to get them back to the front line.
Might be someone has access to Solothurn Waffenfabrik or Rheinmetall archive and will confirm or not confirm this
theory?
