I need help to Id mortar
Re: I need help to Id mortar
Hi Ilya,
Your information on the factory names is very interesting as, although I did know that the numbers related to the production Plants, I did not know the locations involved. Your last photo, however, is of a WW2 trailer for the German 12cm Grw42 mortar.

Draoich

Re: I need help to Id mortar
Hi All,
It seems to me that this discussion on mortar trailers for Soviet Heavy mortars should fit in better on the 12cm GrW 42 Thread. I have posted some speculation about the frequency of 107mm mortar Trailers on this other thread.

Draoich

Re: I need help to Id mortar
Hi All,
I found this photo of a Soviet mortar which I think is an 82mm PM-43 (Source is http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread. ... tos/page44) but I am not certain. Can anyone confirm that this is correct?

A good photo!
Not a PM-43 but BM-43 (battalion mortar M1943).
With best regards, Ilya.
Re: I need help to Id mortar
Hi Ilya,
Thank you, I realise I had made a mistake and it should be BM for Battalion mortar not PM for Regimental mortar!

Re: I need help to Id mortar
Hi All,
Ilya's response to my last post reminded me about his comment that he had not seen a photo of the trailer for the 120mm Romanian Resita mortar. However, In this very thread there is a photo of what is very likely a Resita mortar. This photo was posted by Sturm78 on the 14 Sep 2011, 22:14. The Resita mortar was a nearly direct copy of the Russian 120mm PM-38 mortar produced by the Romanians.
I have found a photo of a very similar mortar trailer in Wikimedia Commons. This photo is titled 'Mortars used by Yugoslav People's Army, part of Belgrade Military Museum outer exhibition at Kalemegdan fortres' and the author is kos93. I attach a copy of this photo. The mortar and trailer I am referring to are shown on the Right hand side of the photo. Regards,
Draoich

Hello again.
This exhibit was another mystery, it seems that you resolved it! Here're two close-up photos by Massimo Foti:
Another Md. 1942 captured by Yugoslavs is exhibited in Pivka, Slovenia:

Hi all,
Any idea about this mortar? I think this is not the German standard 8cm Gr.Wfr.34 mortar

Re: I need help to Id mortar
Hi All,
I suggest that the mortar shown in Sturm78's most recent post is the Czech 8 cm minomet vz. 36. The elevation mechanism handle for the 8cm Vz. 36 mortar is particularly recognisable as it is mounted to the side (directly over one of the bipod legs) and it seems to me that this is where the elevation winder handle is located in the photograph. I attach a sketch showing the 8cm Vz. 36 mortar. I found this on forum.valka.cz. Regards,
Draoich

Thank you very much for your help, Draoich.
These small details, that differentiate each other mortars, are very difficult to see.

No, it's some sort of Brandt M1927/31 — note the distictive baseplate, for example.
With best regards, Ilya.
Re: I need help to Id mortar
Hi All,
I agree with Ilya that it is a Brandt' type mortar.
I am reasonably sure that it is the Soviet 82mm BM-36 mortar. Photos of this mortar are fairly scarce and most modern photos are of captured examples adopted (and modified) by the Finns. The first and most easily identified feature is the base-plate, which has the distinctive BM-36 rectangular raised lip framing the Receiver socket. I cannot identify other distinctive features of the BM-36 mortar from this photo.
I previously posted a photo of this type of mortar (German captured example) in this Thread on the 04 Nov 2012, 21:58. I noted then that the mortar was a Soviet 82mm BM-36 because the Base-plate appeared to have only one receiver socket and has the distinctive BM-36 rectangular raised lip framing the Receiver socket. There are other distinguishing features, such as the Soviet Sight mortice and the external step in barrel diameter at about 1/3 barrel-length from the muzzle, but these are not visible in the photo shown on Sturm78's last post.
I attach a photo (source is http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File: ... mortar.jpg) showing a Finnish' capture example which has been modified both at the Sight attachment' mortice and at the receiver socket by the Finns. It has also been incorrectly captioned by the museum.

Draoich

Re: I need help to Id mortar
Hi All,
On further reflection, I withdraw the identification of this mortar as an 82mm BM-36. I think that what I mistook for the framing/ raised lip on the base-plate around the socket receiver was probably the bottom of the sling strap lying flat on the base-plate.
I still agree that this is a Brandt' type mortar rather than an 8cm GrW 34.

Draoich
