I need help to Id mortar
Re: I need help to Id mortar
Hi All,
I found this rather grainy photo of a Russian mortar on the web (source http://www.ww2shots.com). I suggest that it is an 82m BM-41 mortar. Can anyone confirm that this is correct?

Draoich

Re: I need help to Id mortar
Yes I think so. I have an old Russian book which contains a diagram comparing the 1938, 1941 and 1943 type 82mm mortar.

YC Chen,
Thank you for the confirmation. Perhaps you could post the diagram?

Hi All,
I found a photo of what seems to be an 81mm mortar on Wikipedia (Source: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Waffe ... e_1944.jpg. Accessed 04/01/2014). Can anyone identify the mortar? Regards,
Draoich

YC Chen,
Thank you for the diagram. It certainly illustrates the difference between the 82mm BM-41 and the 82mm BM-43!

Re: I need help to Id mortar
Hi All,
I found an interesting photo of a Brandt type mortar at http://kruegerwaffen.tumblr.com/post/69 ... twerfer-34. It is obviously not a GrW34 and I suspect that it is an Italian 'Mortaio Da 81mm Mod. 35'. I base this probable identification on the rather distinctive Sight attached. The Italian manufactured Sight for this mortar has a very large horizontal circle. I attach a photo of this Sight (Source Sa-kuva). Can anyone confirm or otherwise identify this mortar?

Hi All,
I think that this is a Chinese-manufactured version of the 3 inch' Stokes mortar. It certainly has a very similar yoke and traversing mechanism.

Re: I need help to Id mortar
The arm-shops of Shanghai Province made mortars of 82mm mortar.
Re: I need help to Id mortar
I think this is not a Shanghai-made Type 20 mortar as shown in tomschen6645's picture. The mortar in Sturm's picture doesn't have the two recuperators mounted above the yoke, so this should be an earlier Chinese copy of Stokes mortar. These earlier copies were made in a number of arsenals all across China and there were very few differences between them.
As for the Shanghai Type 20(made in 1931) 82mm mortar, it is a bit of a hybrid of Stokes mortar and later Brandt type...

Re: I need help to Id mortar
Hi All,
The drawing Tomschen6645 posted looks like it is from a manual but since I don't read Chinese Script I don't know what it is about. It looks like a Brandt mortar with bipod legs similar to those used for the early model Stokes.
Also, I found this photo on the web at http://waralbum.ru/177874 (accessed 02/04/14): The caption said that it is of a Romanian mortar on the Eastern Front. Can anyone identify it?
