Acc. to a comtemporary SA manual 70169 should be 81 Krh/38, as "In bipod 38 the sight dovetail is of the same piece as the traversing mechanism body" i.e. the dovetail is machined from the same solid steel bar and is not a separate part bolted on. With some Irfanview applied to 70169 one can see that this is is the case.

The sight itself is no clue, as the various versions of sight model 35 could be mounted on various models interchangeably.

Ummhhh.... Now, I am not sure... This mortar have a muzzle reinforcement ring,...and the model 81 Krh/35 is the only one Tampella mortar with this feature, no ??

Sturm, you are right, my bad: the barrel is model 35, and only the bipod is model 38 and acc. to the manual, the decisive factor is the BARREL, thus a 81 Krh/35 it is. However, as most of the main parts (barrel, bipod, base plate, sight) are more or less interchangeable, many mixed models have been observed. This seems to have been the reason, why a separate indentification guide was needed.

Well, here another two images from SA-Kuv archive (90000-81619)

Image 1: uummhhh....I am not sure....The sight seems of Soviet origin but I think the bipod is of Tampella design.... :?
Image 2: I am not sure. It seems a 81mm Tampella Krh/38 mortar but...without sight... :?

SA 81570: might be Tampella 81 Krh/36 with Brand sight model 31.
SA 81619: Tampella 81 krh/38 w/o sight; most likely the picture is staged, or the sight has been removed prior to bedding shots in muddy ground.
SA 84816: Brandt 81 Krh/31 with sight model 31.
SA 90000: Tampella 81 Krh/33 with sight unit model 37, a Tampella dovetail compatible conversion of ex-Soviet sight.

Once again, these are well educated guesses only, because the identifying details are few due to picture angles and additionally, various components have been used interchangeably, notably the sights.

And please, no thanks messages for this, as they add nothing to this (or any for that matter) thread.

Why not other 81 Krh/36 model or a 81mm Brandt Krh/31 ?? :?

On the other hand, how is posible differenciate between an 50mm RM38 and a RM-39 soviet mortars??

As for SA 81570 I do repeat my disclaimer "Once again, these are well educated guesses only, because the identifying details are few due to picture angles and additionally, various components have been used interchangeably, notably the sights".

E.g. Finnish Army on 81 Krh/36: "Finnish (Tampella), French, Italian ans Polish models exist. Finnish and some foreign sights have 6000 or 6400 traverse and 40-90 degrees elevation. Italian sights are 6400 / 40-90".

The same degree on confusion is common to all mortars in Finnish use.

Hi all,

I am not sure about this one. This mortar seems to have a muzzle reinforcement ring,...so I think an Tampella 81 Krh/35 mortar. Is this correct ??
