unknown object
hi guys, i have a question about this object...
it's not really a fortification or artillerie item, but could it be a mine, smokebomb or something like that?
the picture was made during the neue westwall peroid when the dutch beaches were still accessable.
gr, tim

Re: unknown object
It looks far too small to be part of a flammenwerfer 42...

Re: unknown object
May I point out, that the 2 German soldiers AND 2 brittish Bobbies, are on the same beach!!!
Would that not mean The Channel Islands? Guernsey or Jersey.

Re: unknown object
That's the pier at Schevingen (Netherlands), demolished by the germans during WW2 and rebuilt in the 1950's (but tim should know more about that ).TommySoelbergDK wrote:May I point out, that the 2 German soldiers AND 2 brittish Bobbies, are on the same beach!!!

I think several german regiments wore the "bobby" style helmet, among them KNIL, but undoubtedly there are dutch uniformscollectors who can tell more.

Re: unknown object
hi guys, the ''bobby's'' are in fact dutch policemen.
at that time in holland, the regional policecorpses used different uniforms and headgear.
the ones on the pictures are from the den haag police.
indeed the pier was destroid 26 march 1943, but it was most likely an accident
there was alot of hay (hooi) for german horses stationed on the pier, and most likely that catched fire.
the ''common'' given reason that is was a landingplace for enemy boats don't make sense, because the water is only 2 meters deep, and it would be very hard to climb on the high pier...
if the allies would manage to climb up, it would be easy to stop them bij shooting at the pier.
and if is was destoiyd because it was a recognissionpoint they should have also demolished the massive ''kurhaus''!
but these are just my thougts, it would be nice to see some german evidence that is was an accident or not
maybe a KTB, or the lageberichten from the ortskommandant can give an answer..

Re: unknown object
Two small problems: Our policemen have never carried swords on duty, and there's no pier like that in the islands!TommySoelbergDK wrote:May I point out, that the 2 German soldiers AND 2 brittish Bobbies, are on the same beach!!!

Re: unknown object
ok this has got my interest, any chance the image could be enhanced around the area of the item in question especially the section behind what looks like the opening, i am curious to see if it is attach to the beech or if it has simply been washed up.

Re: unknown object
@Kalinor - if the device were attached to the beach, I doubt there would have been much interest shown. OOpps, it has popped up - OK , deal with it.
I concur with the "smoke float" school of thought.
