Interestingly, my mount was remanufactured at Suhl, but the gun is a Rheinmetall-Borsig gun.

Now, being a bit more familiar with the weapon and mount, I can safely say that the two guns in this photo ARE 103/38s. I was somewhat suspect of the gun in the foreground, but looking at the area I've got circled, you can see the charging crank and the travel lock for the 30mm mount. Neither of those features was on the Flak 38.

The 17th Panzer Division had 40 guns issued in February 45 and they were split evenly between Panzergrenadier Regiment 40 and Heer Flakabteilung 297. Most were mounted on Steyr 1500A trucks (which I believe these are), so it is a safe bet that these are probably 17th Pz Div vehicles.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the updates on the restoration.
There appears to be quite a few details in that photo that identify it as a 3cm Mk 103/38. The plate welded across the back of the upper lafette above the traverse mechanism, the additional skirts/ plates welded along the rear legs of the lower lafette, the ammunition box and the small blanking plate welded of the hole for the lever to lock the upper and lower lafette.
Just a shame that it's not a clearer photo.
Looking forward to seeing the 2cm Flakvierling 38 restoration:) How did you get on with the Visierkopf 38/40?

Cheers
Allan

Allan,

Don't worry. Once we get her out of the shop on Friday, I'll shoot a whole detailed walkaround.

Jon,

Not worried at all mate. Look forward to seeing the photos. What I've seen looks great. Currently stripping down one of my 1/6 DML 2cm Flak 38s to rebuild as a Jaboschrek. Scratchbuilding the cannon is certainly going to be interesting.

Would be really interested to see any photos that anyone might have of the 2cm Flak 38 with this last pattern Flakvisier assembly or with the additional skirts welded onto the rear legs of the lower lafette.

Cheers
Allan

As it used a disintegrating link belt fed I was wondering how many rounds did that square ammo box contain compared to the round one 50? And is it correct to assume that the round ones were used only on the prototypes?

Dan,

I'm not sure just yet. I've got the box sized out and we will be making a new one. We've also got schematics on the 30x194 rounds and will be making several resin copies of them. I believe it's probably a 100 round belt, but I'm not 100% on that.

The box is 401mm high by 372mm wide. Theoretically you could fit about 90 rounds in there, with another ten leading from box to gun. However, until I can get some links and dummy rounds, I won't know exactly how the spacing works.

Thanks for the dimensions Jon, does that mean that the base of the container is square?

It is not. Looks like the base is roughly 310mm deep. I'm using photos of our gun and dividers to estimate that, but it looks about right. We may be off slightly, but it won't be too much.

It's finished! Actually we installed it in the museum on August 1st, but I've been so busy I forgot to post here!

Here's a link to the article that the Army website ran on the Jaboschreck: http://www.army.mil/article/131349/Army ... _standing/

That's me on the far right.

Does it look like Flak 103/38 from the first page?

No doubt, it is the same type of mounting and gun. However, I don't think we can call it Flak 103/38 since it is not mounted on a 2 cm Flak 38 carriage. It looks more simply as a 3 cm MK 103 on a makeshift mounting.

Fantastic pictures!
This is the the so called "Baumaffe" or in Englisch "Tree-Ape".

That was a simplified construction using the 3cm Flak weapon and mounting on a very
simple cradle which then was fixed to a tree trunk. The weapon was introduced in a
weapon show in 1944 besides Kugelblitzand the normal 3cm Flak on the 2cm Flak mount.
There is a very known picture of that show existing and the Baumaffe is slightly visible
in the background.

Best regards
Gert Brandl
