Re: Soviet heavy AA guns in german service
Hi
Does anyone knows about the foreign-made AA guns in Russia use, maybe later captured by Germany?
In Chamberlain & Gander: Anti-Aircraft Guns. (Arco, 1975), they mentions the following:
Original ...................... => Russian designation .. => German designation ..... Origin
9 cm kanon PL vz. 12/20 .. => ????????????? .............. => 9 cm Flak M.12(r) ......... [Czechoslovakia]
40 mm Gun M1 .............. => Model 1939 ............. => 4 cm Flak 28 (Bofors) ?? .. USA [Lend-Lease]
Vickers 75 mm Model 31 ... => ????????????? .............. => ????? .......................... [captured Lithuanian]
Were they rebored to use the Russian calibres: 85 mm, 37 mm and 76.2 mm respectively?
Regards,
Rui

Re: Soviet heavy AA guns in german service
I think I have finally identified a 7,62/8,8 cm Flak M.38(r) as the gun inspected by US soldiers on the following picture. Look at the muzzle brake: it is indeed of the same type as the muzzle brake of the 7,62/8,8 cm Flak M.31(r) with the additional sleeve. As we have noticed, this sleeve is absent on the muzzle brake of the 85 mm M.39.Manuferey wrote:Jos,
It seems logical from a technical standpoint that the muzzle brake of a rebored 7.62/8.8 cm Flak M.38(r) would be mounted in the same way (i.e. with an additional sleeve) as on the 8.8 cm Flak M.31(r). This should help differentiate it from the M.39(r).

This picture was actually posted on this same thread by @ndrew on 27 Dec 2010 at 09:46 (but not identified specifically) !
In the same way as many Germans WW2 documents actually mentioned 8,8 cm Flak M31(r) instead of 7,62/8,8 cm Flak M.31(r) when referencing the 88 mm version proper, I'm wondering if the Germans also used the designation 8,8 cm Flak M.38(r) instead of 7,62/8,8 cm Flak M.38(r) for the 88 mm version.

Re: Soviet heavy AA guns in german service
I think I have found another picture (from ebay.com) of a captured 8,8 cm Flak M38(r): we can recognize the added collar of the muzzle brake and a tube on the side identical to a tube on the previous picture. This tube does not appear on the 8,8 cm Flak M31(r) as far as I can see. Interestingly, this gun was also camouflaged by haystacks. Also note the letter (“B” or “D”) on the destroyed recoil mechanism on top.
