Eisenbahn-Art-Abt Question

#1

Post by hucks216 » 19 Feb 2010, 19:51

Hello all,
Can anyone tell me about Eisenbahn Artillery Abt 721? I have only been able to find out a little - basically the gun type and what is mentioned on Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_cm_Theo ... ne_%28E%29
(that it was used against the Maginot Line and was then incorporated into E.A.A 722).

Does anyone have any amplifying information (or info that might correct Wiki) - locations, confirmation on when/if it was incorportaed into it's sister formation etc.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Hucks216

I can't find anything of the E.A.A. 721 , but there was a batterie E 721 at
La Verdon ( Festung Gironde-Sud ) with 2 x 28 cm K.Br.K. .

Hello Jos,
Thank you for the answer and the link. I think this may of been the same unit. There is a Feldpost Number in a soldbuch which gives the following...
FpNr
09514
(Mobilmachung-1.1.1940) Eisenbahn-Batterie Th.Brücken-Kan. (E) (2.Gesch.) 721,
(28.4.1940-14.9.1940) Eisenbahn-Batterie Th.Brücken-Kan. (E) 721.

In 1941, E.A.A. 721 with its two 28 cm "kurze Bruno Kanonen" was stationed in Cherbourg (Normandy, France). It was moved to Le Verdon in December 1941. However, I don't know when the E.A.A. arrived in Cherbourg. :(

E.A.A. 722 was equipped with four 24 cm Theodor Bruno Kanonen.

Thank you for the additional info. Do you have any information on what happened to it in the months after D-Day?

Hello again

In July 1944 the guns were tranferred from La Verdon ( Gi 331 ) over Bordeaux and Saintes and then to Nord France ,
last notition is from 01-09-1944 that the guns were in the sector Saarbrucken but there were the guns heavily damaged
by Allied airplanes .

Info from Royan-Pointe de Grave from Alain Chazette

I've realized that I meant E. Battr 721 and E. Battr 722 instead of E.A.A. 721 & E.A.A. 722 above. Thanks to Jos for pointing this out to me.

Hello

In AC new book "Atlantikwall Mythe ou Realite" on page 238 there is a passage about the E721 & E722.

"They arrived together in Cherbourg early 1941 and took position at Equeurdreville (Stp. 266) with 4 X 24 cm. Th.B.K. (E) and later same year E721 received 2 X 28 cm. K (E) Krz. Bruno K (Beute) and left for Pointe de Grave in May 1942.

E722 kept the 4 X 24 cm. Th.B.K. (E) and stayed in Equeurdreville until its reposition in June 1944 to Caen and further to its capture in Torigni sur Vire in August 1944."

That the "poor" translation from French to Englich done by Moi.....

Hope its fairly correct.

But there is some differencies in the dates of the transfer of E721 to Pointe de Grave ??

Regards
Kurt

Thanks for the additional information, slowly a picture is forming. Strangely I have the recent edition of After The Battle magazine (Issue 146) which has part 1 of a 2 part feature on Cherbourg 1940-44 and while there are quite a few photos & pages concerning the coastal batteries (including a picture of E 722 test firing a gun) E 721 doesn't get mentioned at all.

The date of transfer of E.721 to Le Verdon that I have mentioned comes from an article in Magazine 39/45 several years ago. I would rather trust AC's book for the correct date now.
