It seems to be this with the operator seating between the giant ears.

Galileo di Firenze appears to be the manufacturer.

Hi Dili,

Yes, you sent me some time ago a very useful link about AA fire directors.

Thanks for the information about the italian searchlight and sound locator. There is very little information about these devices. Any new information and/or images of this items will be wellcome.

Re: Italian coast gun

A few weeks ago, I posted a few photos of the 152/45 coastal gun stationed near Palermo, and there was some mystery regarding its unit deployment. I was down at NARA this past week, so I dug up the 6o Armata records from the captured Italian records collection.

The 152/45 was deployed with the 41o gruppo d'artigliera pesante, commanded by Col. Aldo Festari and headquarted in Palermo. It was subordinate to the 51o raggr. art. p.c. headquartered in Castelluccio. The group had four batteries: one with the 75/27, two with the 152/45 and one with the 105/28.

The 121o btr. da 152/45 was commanded by Cap. Gabriele Zambarbieri and was stationed at Torre del Rotolo; it was supported by the 123o staz. fotoel da 120 searchlight unit.

The 122 btr. da 152/45 was commanded by Ten. Giovanni Cavaiani and deployed at Sarello (E. Aspra) and supported by the 122o staz. fotoel. da 120.

Thanks searay. Do you have any info on what other artillery groups and battery/guns types were part of this 51st Artillery Raggruppamento?

This is a very obscure area since the coastal artillery raggruppamentos could have any kind of artillery from captured guns by Germans given to Italian forces to captured by Italians or just plain Italian guns. And from small 65mm infantry guns to giant mortars of 305mm WW1 vintage like that were in Catania in 21 raggruppamento.
So any info on artillery raggrupamentos is welcome.

Here is a picture (from ebay.de) showing, I think, two 120/45 guns mounted on a ship. On the deck, we can also see a twin AA gun but I have not recognized the type yet.

Image[/URL]

The 120/45 gun was also used in coastal batteries:
See an example here: http://www.cmsc.it/sparta/static/1943/candiani/

on railway artillery.
See in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=70&t=160795

and on submarines:

Great investigative job, Dili !

I suppose that the 120 mm guns were installed primarily to defend the ship against British MTBs and US PT Boats
