6-Sch. WaKoFest turret dig

Hi all,

Permission was given from the land owner of the buried 6-Sch. WaKoFest located at Wn. Steps Pünkt 43 to excavate the in-filled turret room. The exposed steel of the Type 20P7 turret was gas cut off for scrap in 1953 and then in-filled. But both the upper and lower platforms were left in place along with the lower sections of the gun mounts still on the circular gun rail. :o

In the early 60's a very bad storm caused the sea to wash the sand in-fill through the mesh floor of the upper platform exposing the gun carriages etc. still in good condition, a request was made to remove parts, but the land owner at the time backfilled the turret the next day. Then in the 70's the upper platform's floor collapsed through decay and under the weight of the infill, crashing through the lower platform and collapsing it as well. Again the turret room was in-filled with sand.

Several weeks ago it was noticed that one of the gun carriages was protruding from the settled turret infill and that it was still mounted on the circular gun rail, so a request was made to excavate the turret room to recover the gun carriages, circular gun rail etc. for restoration and display in the Type 634 6-Sch. bunker at Stp. Corbiere.

Sadly the decay of all the steel parts inside the turret were so advanced that the gun carriages and the gun rail would disintegrate into bits of rust when attempts were made to remove them :(

Although the turret room yielded nothing recoverable, we then dug down deep enough to be able to enter the rest of the bunker. It had been left open until the 60's so not much was expected to be found. The scrap men had removed all the doors but had left all the ventilation piping in place. Also all the ventilation valves were still in situ and some were recovered along with the remaining bunk hooks attached to the wall.

One thing of note with the way the bunker was constructed is that all of the corners were given a 45 degree chamfer to them. even the edges of the recesses in the entrance 8-)

The owner had a look while the access through the turret room was still open and he was impressed enough to decide to leave the turret room excavated and he will excavate the bunker entrance so it can be used for storage! :D

Regards,
Malcolm :milwink:

Shame there was nothing worth recovering down there, Malcolm, but a huge "Well done!" to all involved and a huge "Thank you!" to the owner for allowing access!!

I'd often wondered if there was anything salvageable down there....

Yes very nice work. So this was the same type as the one at Wn La Thiebaut?
Good to see that the owner will now use the bunker, keeps it dry, and better in shape.
