Post by jopaerya » 01 Dec 2014, 18:16

Hello All

The M 178 that I know have all a concrete roof above the squire space were the rangefinder was placed .
Thanks to Anders I received a drawing of the M 178 at the M.K.B. Kiberg with a strange round emplacement
first I thought it was something like the M 150 but this is different . Who has any idea's on this strange thing ??

Drawing = Anders H. Jacobsen

Thank's Jos
Seems to possible be three sprachrohr on the rim. That would indicate rangefinder but it’s hard to tell. Maybe anyone could identify the bettung. A rangefinder normally does not need a sturdy base as the recoil is very light.

Hello jopaerya,

Maybe a 10,5 cm monostatic rangefinder in armored turret (the original naval one, not the coastal designed model) would be an option.

Regards.

That is a good option , but my greatest problem is that a heavy coast battery like Kiberg needs
a larger range finder . Could this be a option a range finder from the battle cruisers ??

To my knowledge (I have tried to reaserch this) Norway had two Seydlitz 10,5m rangefinders. They were placed at Fjell (probably) (triple 28cm gun) and Trondenes (confirmed) (4x 40,6cm guns) Others with Zeiss was Vara (3x 38cm guns), Dietl (3x 40,6cm) and Austerått (triple 28cm gun)

Husøen had same guns as Kiberg (3x 28cm SKL/45 Krupp) and they had a 6 meter in turret, regelbau M120. All other major batteries in Norway had 6meter rangefinders (then known types) in addition to the really big ones with 10,5m as listed above.

Anyway, the base is too small for a 10,5m of any type. The battery’s 15cm flare gun could have been a possibility but it had its own regelbau M158. They also had 2x Freya 39G but the positions are identified.

According to JEF the battery had a French 14m rangefinder in its own housing, possible on top of the bunker. As I have no pictures or drawings of this I release it in current state.

Cheers

The French 14 meter rangefinder with housing must be from a ex-French warship ??

He describes it as a “tall steel house” again from intelligence report so possibly.
