Heavy coastal artillery in Northern France, 1940

#1

Post by Jens Andersen » 17 Apr 2015, 10:49

Hi,

I was looking through "Signal" in search for something else (which I didn't find) when I came across these photos of heavy coastal artillery in Northern France.

I thought I would share them with you.

Can anybody identify the places and guns involved?

Best regards
Jens

Hello Jens,
the first picture could be a 30,5 cm SK/L something. I guess the picture was made in Germany, not in France (there are no such pine trees around here...). The pictures below could have been made in north of France (but where..?), the type of farms buildings is matching, but it's hard to tell if it's a K5 railway gun or an heavy marine gun (28 cm or more) or even just a photomontage with two different pictures assembled together (one with the farm, one with the smoking gun).

The first picture could show a 30,5 cm SK L/50 of schwere Stellungs-Batterie 230 on the Westwall, possibly the south gun at the Hübschberg.

Bonjour Alain,

Yes, indeed. Schwere Stellungs-Batterie 230 and Ottenhöfen batterie are one and the same (see the book « Die Marinegeschütze des Westwalls am Oberrhein »). This batterie had two 30,5 cm SK L/50 guns. I see now a piece of the concrete wall on the color picture as on your pictures so it would be the north gun (I think).

Hello,

Thank you for identifying the place. It once more prooves that you should also be sceptical about what pictures really shows in war time magazines.

Hello

I would think that the other pictures with the farmhouse could be Batterie Todt.

See these pictures from other topic here on Axis about Batterie Todt.

The farmhouse looks the same, and in the right angle it could be the gun from Batterie Todt.

Regards
Kurt
