Dora Railway gun question
Re: Dora Railway gun question
In this picture you can see where the special railway starts to be reinforced. Look closely at the notches in the rail.
Re: Dora Railway gun question
Now about the firing of the gun.
The Big Gun was loaded separately with the shell and the cartridge. They were elevated trough the back elevators.
Now, in the back of the gun were two wagons per each line Temperierwagen/Kartuschwagen that were build custom for this gun. This wagons were armored and they were very heavy, This wagons not only provide the gun with shells and cartridges but also maintain the optimum temperature of the shells and cartridges so to not be exposed of the outside weather.
The special Temperierwagen/Kartuschwagen were conected between them by 2 large hatches with hoses to distribute the heat or cool air trough the wagons. Like in this picture:

Re: Dora Railway gun question
Here's the elevation process.
I believe that one wagon was carrying the shells, the parallel one from the next line was carrying the cartridge, and one elevator was raising the shell and the other the cartridges.

Re: Dora Railway gun question
In this picture you can see that the elevator is lowered at the wagons platform you can see the open doors of the Kartuschwagen's and the right wagon unloading a big cartridge, you can see the rolling cart used for transportation and elevation, The wagons had rail in them for the cart to enter and were connected between the first wagon and the one in the back of each other.
Re: Dora Railway gun question
The special wagon of the Gustav were 4 in number 2 each line, I'm not sure there were 4, judging from these pictures I assume.
Now the wagons are turned to museums some are scrapped, and the once in museum are cutted windows and doors in them. The original armored Kartuschwagen or Temperierwagen didn't have windows or lateral doors.
Here are some pictures
PS: Dora and Gustav special wagons Kartuschwagen and Temperierwagen had bogies with double axle. Other Kartuschwagen and Temperierwagen for Krupp K-5e or other smaller guns only had one axle.

Notice the hatches of the rubber hoses for air conditioned.

Re: Dora Railway gun question
Here's a picture on a Kartuschwagen roof in the inside, had a long traversal steel beam where a hook with trolley were lowering the heavy 7 ton projectile. But this Kartuschwagen is not of Gustav or Dora.
