Verbrennungsraummesser für 12,8 cm + R.Ag

#1

Post by stril » 14 Jan 2004, 13:52

Hello,
It would be nice if someone could push me in the right direction about these ones, where to find info and so on.

7,3 cm R.Ag 35-fach
8,6cm R.Ag M/42
Rohrwagen für 12,8cm
Verbrennungsraummesser für 12,8 cm

I know that R.Ag has to do with rockets, rohrwagen is something about "barrel", verbrennungsraummesser i dont know.
Regards

RAG means "raketen abschuß gerät" and it is a general abbrevation for rocket launching weapons.
I have no further info on your versions...

Rohrwagen für 12,8cm
Was used when moving heavy artillery. The gun would then be split in 2 pieces. The barrel would be loaded on a separate wagon for transport.

verbrennungsraummesser..... My guess is that this is the tool used to measure the distance between the breechblock and the barrel. It looks like 8-10 steelplates varying from 0,1 - 1 mm..... A good tool to check if the gun is getting worn out! Looks the same as tha tool used to check the ignition on cars......

Verbrennungsraum means combustion chamber in this case.

Hello stril

7,3 cm R.Ag 35-fach must be identical with the 7,3 cm Föhn-Gerät.

Hello
Its been some time since i posted that question :)
But still the info is welcomed. I have got some more info on the 8,6 cm R:Ag. M/42 since then, but the info from Lars was new for me.
The equipment listed and the place mentioned together with these made think that they was just stored. But now im not that certain that these items was just stored, but perhaps mounted and ready for use.
All placed at vital places in the harbour. Wasserbombenwerfer 600, Wasserbombenwerfer C/41 (Dreirohrig), 7,3 cm R.Ag.35-fach and 8,6 cm R.Ag. M/42.
The 7,3 cm R.Ag.35-fach is quite interesting if used in Bergen.

Hi Jos,

Well the first photo is Peter's, I thought it was mine, the pictures were taken such a long time ago
If you look at the first photo (Peter's) it looks like in the back there is also an open version?

Yes indeed. The open version was an early one (referred to as the 8,6 cm RAg alterer Fertigung), of different construction - it had no jacket, no sights, the guide frame was mounted with screws, not welded etc.
The version with jacketed frame is the actual 8,6 cm RAg M 42.
7,3 cm R.Ag 35-fach must be identical with the 7,3 cm Föhn-Gerät.
May be identical. Kriegsmarine had its own requirements for the Föhn, and I suspect the naval launchers could be more or less different from the Luftwaffe or Heer ones. Probably an additional rail for the 15 cm RLg was one of the differences.

As was mentionned the Verbrennungsraum is the combustion chamber. With firing this will wear out, especially the cone that formed the transition from the chamber to the barrel. The larger the combustion chamber becomes, the more space the gasses have to expand and the lower the initial velocity is. Needless to say this has a serious impact on the shell's trajectory. A Verbrennungsmesser is used to measure the size of the chamber to determine the impact on the initial velocity.

Best regards,

Caspar
