22cm MRS(p)

#1

Post by Erik E » 03 Jan 2005, 15:14

Hallo!!

Looking for a photo of a Polish gun, known by the Germans as 22cm Mrs(p)
As far as I can figure out, the original name was "220mm M 28 Skoda"
So this should infact be a Czech gun......

The (x) national code was applied for the army which owned the equipment at the time of its capture. In many cases, there were only minor differences, in some there were more obvious ones.

Hi all,

Another image of a 220mm Skoda barrel trailer.
It could be both a Wz.32 polish or a M28 Yugoslavian howitzer (see the 155mm Schneider Mle.1917 howitzer in the background)

Hello Sturm78,
The photo shows clearly a Polish 220 mm mozdzierz Wz. 32
This can be seen by the cylinder screw breech . The Yugoslavian
220 mm M 28 have a horisontal wedge block .

Thank you very much for your help, ludvig.
I did not know that both models had different breeches. I have seen very few images of the Yugoslavian 220mm M28 .

Hello Uwe

According to the list of used captured artillery from 01-03-1944 there were 7 x 22 cm Mörser in Norway
used by the Army and not by the H.K.A. as you can read on this link there were 3 guns used in the 11./274
and in the book from JEF there were also 3 x guns in B. Kroken and later in Batr. 585.

I might give som information on the 22 cm Mrs(p) and (j) in Norway during the war. I see a lot of not so correct info in different sites on the web.

In early 1941 the Heeresküstenartillerie in Norway was assigned 4 batteries armed with 22 cm Mrs(p). These batteries were HKB 585, 586, 587 and 588. Before shipment from Germany they only managed to get 9 guns ready, so HKB 588 was substituted with German 15 cm K16.
HKB 585 was located at Söfteland, later Kroken south of Bergen and was rearmed with 21 cm Mrs.18 in October 1941. HKB 586 was located at Reitan east of Bodö, and was rearmed with 21 cm Mrs.18 in May 1942.
HKB 587 was located in Klinga south of Namsos and was rearmed to 21 cm Mrs.18 in May 1942.

The 22 cm guns were all to be shipped back to Germany, but was allowed to be used in land defense role in various places in Norway. One Mörser was shipped back to Germany, the remaining 8 was retained.

In May 1943 a number of 22 cm Mrs.(j) was sent to Norway.

The guns from HKB 585 ended up in the Stavanger area as Battery Folkvaar, finally as 11./Art.Rgt 274.

I may 1945 the rest of the equiment was located as follows:
In the rear area of Harstad a battery of four 22 cm Mrs.(p) under command of Art.Gruppe Harstad (IV/HKAR 983). The battery had no designation as it was put up in the chain of command as a Materialbatterie/Alarmbatterie. This battery was in the Porsanger area in 1943.

The remainder of the guns left in Norway in 1945 was reported as (j) versions, but that might be slightly incorrect.

Battery B1 and B2 at Björnefjell north of Narvik each had 3x22 cm Mrs.(j), and were former Batteries Nordreisa and Andsvatnet. At Elvenes was one 22cm Mrs(j) from former battery Andsvatnet. All these listed as Gerätebatterien.

In May 1945 there were 14 surviving guns in Norway.

I hope this information might be of interest for some of you :)

JEF
