Re: German bunkers in Italy
Hi everybody,
My first post on this forum.
I used to live near Punta Sabbioni and I’m familiar with all the fortifications in the Cavallino-Treporti peninsula.
Some info on the type anti-aircraft artillery used by the Germans
My father, who was 15 at the end of the hostilities, remembers going to the Punta-Sabbioni complex (btw, does it have an official name/denomination? It is known to the locals as the “Batteria Nuova” – New Battery – as opposed to the older, Italian batteries of WW I vintage) and upon finding all the “equipment” abandoned and in perfect working order, decided, along with some friends, to load one of the triple-a light guns and proceed to have some fun at the expenses of a covey of seagulls floating offshore.
Such was the state of things with law-enforcement in the aftermath of the hostilities, that there were no consequences for any of the “players” of this not so innocent prank!
What is interesting is the type of guns, as the old man remembers them as being of a fully automatic, side-by-side type, which led me to believe they were the ubiquitous 20mm flakzwilling.
Instead he was adamant on the caliber as being 37mm and indeed, some four years ago, I found an un-expended 37mm round, someone had somehow dug-out, sitting on one of the pillboxes, not far from the location of the complex’ main ammo-dump that the Germans had blown-up before their final withdraw in April 1945.
A Google, pics search has turned out some pictures of the 3.7 cm/83 SK C/30 gun, which my father has recognized as being the kind of gun he had fired in 1945.
So far as the larger caliber guns are concerned, I had taken it for granted they were 88’s, however when I showed the picture of the different models of the 88, along with pictures of the Ansaldo 90mm Mod.41 to a couple of the locals who were involved in the construction of the site, they both agreed the Mod. 41 was the gun they remembered as being used by the Germans at the Punta Sabbioni complex.
I know this is hardly any evidence the Ansaldo Mod. 41 was indeed the type of gun used there, but at the same time, one cannot completely rule out this possibility…
Also, there are two more, very little known complexes, located on both sides of the Piave river, near its mouth, in the Jesolo area.
Most of the pillboxes are ‘off the beaten path’ and in 2001 I had listed on a MS Excel file the geographical coordinates of all the single bunkers on the western bank of the river.
I lost the file when my old PC crashed, but I’m pretty sure I can still remember their location if I go there: if someone is in the Jesolo area (where I live now) and would like to have a ‘guided’ tour, please PM me.
Regards.

Re: German bunkers in Italy
Hello Pete1957
First welcome on this Forum , this is what I could find on Punta Sabbioni .
Batteria V. 678 IV with 4 x 76/40 ( Italian 1942 )
M.K.B. V. 678 with 6 x 10 cm K ( German 1944 ) most likely 100/47 italian flakguns
M.K.B. Punta Sabbioni with 6 x 10 ( German Marine-Artillerie-Abteilung 4./632 )
Sorry I could not find any information on the light flakguns at Punta Sabbioni , but from
info that I have from the Genua area there were 3.7 cm in Dopp.Laff. in service at that
time .
I am very interested in any info on the German bunkers at the mouth of the Piave river ,
maybe you can make some picture's for us , when you have time ?? That would be great .
Regards Jos
P.S. there is also a small article about bunkers in the Venice area with also some info about Punta Sabbioni .

Re: German bunkers in Italy
Thanks for the info jopaerya.
I used to have some pictures of the western complex, but right now, I can't quite recall where I've saved them.
I'll try to take some pictures of both complexes sometimes in the fall/winter season (hope I'll just get some time to do it, as I'll be a first-time father in September ).
The eastern complex, in particular, is located in a rather wooded and swampy area and, in the summer, it is not too unusual to run into specimen of the local poisonous snakes, (mind, it ain't no Louisiana bayou, but still...! ) so fall/wintertime will be a much better time to do it!

Re: German bunkers in Italy
I think I might go and have a look for these tomorrow as I have a pretty good idea of at least the second photos location.
Re: German bunkers in Italy
That would be great , the building in the back is very characteristic . Looks that the bunker are surrounded by a ditch ??

Re: German bunkers in Italy
I'm pretty convinced these are sat right on Rimini Harbour except for the third photo which is most likely Viserba.
Anyway, I'm going to concentrate my search in the area below but maybe not today as we have had a mad storm this morning and the rain is continuing.

Re: German bunkers in Italy
Those are Italian. I've only ever seen them down South, for example when I visited Puglia in the South East.
