Correct, it is an SdKfz-8 12 ton semi-track artillery tractor. The big disc front wheels are a key to IDing vehicles built after 1938/39 (the Mercedes Benz built vehicles had the three pointed star on the front hubs), and the sheer size is a giveaway too. The radiator and hood/"bonnet" is wider than on an SdKfz-7.Sturm78 wrote:Hi David,

Hi all,
An 15.5cm K419f gun in tow in North Africa. Note the GPF limber, with solid rubber tires, instead of GPF-T with pneumatic wheels

Nice photo!
Good comment too.
How about that prime mover? SdKfz 7?
Thanks for posting.

Re: French 155 GPFT used by German troops
The semi-track vehicle in this photo towing this GPFT is a Daimler Benz SdKfz-8 12 ton artillery tractor, specifically a Model DB-10 built by Mercedes and Krauss-Maffei (this latter manufacturer only built 315 of them) between 1939 and 1944. Normally this semi-track tractor would tow weapons like the 15cm K-18 and K-39 guns, 17cm K-18 in Mörser Laffette, the old First World War 21cm Lang Mörser ("M-1916"), the 21cm Mörser 18, the 10.5cm FlaK-38 and Flak-39. The GPFT could probably have been handled adequately enough by an SdKfz-7, however.

Hi all,
Does somebody know which German artillery units used this gun in North Africa?

Re: French 155 GPFT used by German troops
Schwarzermai,
Thanks for that.
What were the differences between the 418(f) & the 419(f). I was under the impression (perhaps falsely) that they were essentially one and the same apart from "cosmetics".

Re: French 155 GPFT used by German troops
David,
The visible differences between the 155 GPF and the 155 GPFT (Touzzard) were the pneumatic wheels. The axles had also been modified accordingly. The advantage was an average towing speed increased from 7-8 km/h to 25 km/h and this translated into a longer distance being covered per day: 50-60 km for the GPF, 200 km for the GPFT.
Another modification, not visible from the outside, was a volume increase of the firing chamber allowing an increased firing range from 18.5 to 21 km. (source: Stephane Ferrard in a French forum - S. Ferrard is a French expert in the French Army's weapons in WW2).
I noticed that Stephane Ferrard wrote GPFT and not GPF-T in his article.
