ive seen a pic of a german soldier possibly a panzer grenadier running accross a battlefield with two rifles i think they were both kar98s plus he had a p08/p38 pistol and a case of 7.92mm mg belts ( heavily armed if i say so my self) id say it was quite common but then ill prob get shot down for saying so but heres what i will say ANYTHINGs possible in a war juat remember you dont always follow rules...

two weapons are a good thing for one solid reason -if one jams/ gets damaged/ runs out of ammo you still have a backup besides a pistole which is only for cqc not mp/ rifle range combat... ill try and find the book

your in luck i just found it it is in Squadron/Signl publications weapons number five

"Panzergrenadiers in Action"

on pg 33 there is a pic of the above mentioned grenadier the caption reads
" A Panzergrenadier hastily seeks shelter on the outskirts of Stalingrad. Carrying two Kar98Ks and a box of machine gun ammunition. this soldier presents a typical example of many experienced combat troops. Many soldiers disposed of their heavy field packs. then ended up carrying extra ammo, grenades, even spare weapons"

ill post the pic soon
blah blah blah

A friend once commented that while he had a pistol (he was a machinegunner), he carried and sometimes used a PPsH.
