MG 34 & 42 ammo belts

Postby st. oswald on 28 May 2009 20:17

does anyone know in what quantities the ammo was provided in the belt boxes for the MG 34 & 42?

did the boxes contain 250 rounds of ammo? If so, were they split into 5 belts with 50 rounds each or was it one continuous belt of 250 rounds?

thanks in advance

Boxes contained 250 rounds in five belts that were joined to form two continious belts of 100 and 150 rounds. These belts were then stored in the boxes facing in opposing directions to keep them level because of the tapered case shape.

Yabint is basicly correct although 200 rnd belts did exist, it was found through combat experience that it was easier to carry 50 rnd belts( all of the men in a Zug carried belts for the Mg)and the trommel (drum)had a 50 rnd capacity, the standerd was 250 rnd cans (5 belts of 50 rnds)total of 5 cans per mg team of 3 men, plus what the rest of the Zug carried (belts or cans),as a point the belts where interchangable (also the drums) between the 34/42 series. in a first time derivative bands of cloth and MG08 MG08/15, new tapes contain metallic 250 cartridges!
once consumed this type of tape tangle and become very uncomfortable! It was therefore decided to split these bands into pieces of 25 shots. but there it was too short and we created the strip 50 moves linkable.

yet the experience of the first war, ammunition boxes thus contained 250 cartridge!
but with the cosomation of MG42, the German army has filled his boxes with 300 shots!
