K98 I purchased

#1

Post by Panzerlied214 » 26 Dec 2010, 06:24

I recently purchased a German K98 and need some help identifying it. I used the Mauser 98K Unofficial Website and according to the letter code "BYF" it was manufactured at Mauser AG Oberndorf. However, I'm unsure if that is a complete list on that site as the serial number on my rifle is 4059. The eagle stamp with swastika is visible and what apprear to be SS runes. This I need help determining authenticity as I learned that SS model K98's are really rare. One slight difference however is I noticed a stamp that said "R GUNS CARPENTERSVILLE IL". Any help you folks could give me would be a great help.

Sounds like it's an import.....which means it's been reworked and probably renumbered. The chance of it being "SS" marked (original, I mean) as "slim" at best.....and the so called "Russian/Ukranian" imports can be bought with SS markings, skulls, etc. (all added!).

That said, it's possible.......but you'll need to post pictures (basically of the markings, receiver, etc.)....we all know what the overall rifle looks like.....but don't get your hopes up.....
Welcome to the forum, by the way.....

Do you know how to shrink picture size, they're not uploading because the file is too big.....

Upon further inspection I saw what appears to be the number 135 above the BYF manufacture stamp. Also, a stamp resmbling an F below the serial on the left side of the rifle.

There is a guy by the name of Scott B who is writing a book on the subject of SS rifles at this forum.

I would not bet that it is an actual SS rifle, since fakes abound, but good luck.

The marking looks to be an over stamp fo some sort, BUT I can assure you that it is Not a legit SS marking!
Also looks like an RC X after the ser nr and I see what appeares to be another RC X above the ser nr.
The eagle 135 above the byf (NEVER in caps!) is the final acceptance proof mark. The eagle/swastika before the ser nr is the firing proof or Beschutz.
What does the ser nr have to do with the byf code not being legit??? Beside which the correkt ser nr for your rifle is 4059f.

It would sure help if you would learn to start a sentence with a capitol letter and put a period(.) at the end of a sentence!!! Sure as hell would make it easier to read your message!!!

Where "on the rec & under the bbl" is the C???
The 269 38 RU is the bbl mfgr mkgs and date.
Why do you think the bolt is from a Gew 98??? 2M 8610 is Where on the bolt???
Photos of all this would sure reduce the need to guess just what the hell you are talking about!!!!

The c is a part of the serial nr.
The bolt is not from a German rifle - WW1 or WW 2.

The bolt is very old in looks . It also has what looks to be a S on bottem of bolt handle . I read that Germany would sometimes mark a replacement piece with a letter. That is why i assumed it was a Gew 98. This rifle is in nice shape light rust. How bad will it effect value with this bolt?Should i try to find another 1939 k98 bolt ? Or does it matter beings numbers won't mach?
