FG42 in Vancouver BC
I was in BC on a job.
One of the locals knew I was an arms collector and said he had an FG42 at his regimental museum, I was skeptical, but sure enough they had one.
It was captured in Northern France - where the BC regiment encountered some bitter resistance.
In the museum there was a miniature mock up and lots of history involving skirmishes with an SS Panzer Division - I could not find anything directly related to encounters with Fallschirmjaeger - but presume there was direct involvement, or perhaps the FG material was just bringback that was traded after the conflict.
I have seen another later model (2nd) FG42 in Western Canada, that was a bring-back, from Northern France.
Bolt has been removed for storage.
Rubber vulcanized material on bipod, I had never noticed on pictures.
I have the shoei replica in my collection, and the selector scratches the bluing on the replica as well,

Stock reciprocates when firing to help deaden recoil.

Re: FG42 in Vancouver BC
Tried everything I could to get them to sell it to me, no joy - and I am pleased they didn't it is where it belongs!
They also had items going back to WW1 in their museum.
Maxim, MP18, Lewis gun.
As well as WW2.
FG, MP44, MP40, Mauser examples of rifles, pistols, etc.,

Other items in their regimental museum - it is interesting what you find in the middle of the city, but off the beaten path.:
Interesting steel resting bar.
Oh, this one belongs somewhere else, a day at my office...

Nice pics of a rare weapon. Thanks.

Hello
Could you tell the name of that museum? What regiment?
Maybe a link to their homepage.
I am interested as I have relatives in Vancouver BC.
Thanks in advance.

Re: FG42 in Vancouver BC
Hi there,
It's the BCR regimental trophy room attached to the Officer's mess.
It is not open to the public - but, if you're motivated a polite call may get you in there.
(It's the only building I saw with a Sherman tank parked outside of it, in Vancouver BC.)
Pit.
This was elsewhere on my adventures - this is also not a public museum.

Re: FG42 in Vancouver BC
Regarding the provenance of the FG-42 pictured above, given it's a type G with a rather high serial number, I'd say it's more likely it was captured in northern Germany than France.
Another option is the Nijmegen Salient if the (possible) date "BCR 1945.22.1A" written in white on the hand guard is anything to go by. The 4th Division was involved in an attack against an FJ unit at Kapelsche Veer after that date (although the BCR was only used in support), and there had been a couple of attacks by other units against the same target previously as well as patrol activity in the area. It seems a likely candidate, at least, but hopefully the museum has the full story written down somewhere.
Pitfighter, did you get my email?

The museum is probably located in the Beatty Street Drill Hall. It seems the website went down with the rebuild of the Canadian Forces site, and the email addresses along with it. The Wikipedia entry says it's open on Wednesdays - or at least it was in 2007 - another site says it's open Thursday afternoons. Your relatives or some other local will probably have the best information, although with the site inactive and no information showing up on any updated lists of museums, chances are the museum is closed.kstdk wrote:Hello

Re: FG42 in Vancouver BC
That is great info, Stephan!
Thank you - yes, it was on Beatty st. - I am not sure they open it to the public anymore.
Of course that is their business not mine -
They have a nice display, and it has recently been redone, tastefully and carefully.
The work was done by a returning vet to counter mild PTSD, and he has done a splendid and thorough job of it.
To be honest I didn't write any of the info. down, and went by what the Sergeant told me, and he was spotty on a few subjects as I pulled them out of the Officers bar to let me into the museum - so, we should forgive them this time - I was pleased they let me take out the weapons and photograph, strip and examine them.
The collection went back to WW1 and had some really fine examples of bring-backs.
I was told the FG Bolt and magazine were stored inside an FJ helmet in the regiments walk in magazine downstairs.
Sorry - the pics have gone - I cleaned up my photobucket account as the pics were allowing access to my whole library on some sites -
Stephan, if you didnt hear back from me, feel free to email me directly at figgypix(at)yahoo.com -
Thanks for the info.
