g98/40 German Mannlicher rifle...

#1

Post by jonnyboy369 » 01 Oct 2014, 10:08

Hello AHF, I've been a fan of this Hungarian-German rifle for a long time. I have not owned or fired one, but it is very interesting to me that the Germans apparently had built, modified, and issued to some troops a Mannlicher rifle. I know they issued very many captured arms to all kinds of units, but I would like to know what units or troops used this rifle and also if anyone has any photos of it being carried by German troops. My interest in the g98/40 is primarily that I think it is a nice looking weapon. It is a nicer looking rifle than a 98k to me. Thanks if anyone has any info or photos.

In summary, it's simply a contract version of the Hungarian 43M rifle, chambered for the standard German 7.92x57mm.

They were manufactured from 1941-44, with 1943 being the most frequently encountered. These were a contract, not capture weapon, and were built under German supervision, hence the assignment of a Heeres WaffenAmt team (Inspectors 173 and 56) to the factory for maintenance of production standards. They are not frequently seen in period photos, but perhaps the most famous photograph shows a Waffen SS soldier holding one while being transported in a personnel carrier. A Google search by image will probably yield this quickly.

Pat, thank you for the info regarding the 98/40 rifle. I have been trying to find that photo with no luck so far. I cant find any images of it in a wartime photo at all.

Yes I did try Google but that for me turned up nothing. I did however find a video of someone firing a 98/40 rifle. They have a photo of a platoon or more of German troops marching on a city street somewhere in wartime Europe, and they are all armed with 98/40 rifles. The video is on youtube, and I believe the guy who posted it is Romanian. I asked where he found it in the comments section but I'm not sure if he speaks English. This is the only photo of it carried I ever saw.
