On paper, the squad members were basically LMG feeders. On the surface, the MP44 really didn't seem to fit in at all.

I've often wondered the same thing. It was a revolutionary new weapon in so many ways, and yet in photos and memoirs it often seems to be just another rifle issued to individual soldiers in a sea of 98k's and some MP40's (like the G43).

In WWi, the MP18 was issued to entire units with new training to go with it. It doesn't see to be the case with the MP43 / StG44.

It was just another rifle - albeit with a larger capacity magazine and different caliber round (and it cannot accept a bayonet.)
There was really no tactical difference to it's use, than what might have been required of the G/K43 series.

*Except of course, there would have been no bayonet charge possible.

The manual and mandate concerning automatic-fire was clear - fully automatic fire was for use in "emergency" situations only.

It was a punishable offense to use FA - Sturmgewehr! the book, cites ammunition shortages as the cause of the ruling, not the rifles mechanical short-comings. They have the letter outlining this, transcribed in the book.

The MP18 was designed to be used in FA - so an altogether different application. From what I have read, the MP44 wasn't ever intended to be used in an SMG type role.
