Bergmann light machine gun in WW I?
Bergmann light machine gun in WW I?
In a couple of sources I have encountered a mention that during the War of Independence (1918-1920) the Estonian troops had at their disposal a small number of "Bergmann light machine guns". I can only guess that these were the MP-18 submachine guns. Or there existed also Bergmann light machine guns?
Thanks for any help,

Hi!
Finnish Defence Forces had about 20 Bergmann LMG´s, of which 19 were sold abroad 1937 by Transbaltic Oy company. Their origing is not known for sure, but possibly they were from our Independence War 1918.
Regards, Juha

The Bergmann MG15 was used in small numbers from 1916 onwards. It was sighted to only 400m despite a range of around 4,000m.It had a tendency to overheat and jam though. It was also used more extensively on aircraft.

Isn't that Madsen LMG?
Are you certain for that being the correct picture? It looks a lot more like Madsen LMG to me.Moulded wrote:Germans with Bergmann MG15 Caporetto 1917:

Thanks for responses. I had made a search with Google before I asked here, but it seems I wrote Bergman instead of Bergmann.

Bergmann MG15 nA Gun
Updated - Saturday, 3 May, 2003
Although by no means supplanting the widespread and effective Maschinengewehr 08, the Bergmann 7.92mm machine gun (the MG15 nA) was adopted by the German Army in 1915 as a means of meeting increasing demand for the machine gun as a battlefield weapon, and was also adopted by the nascent air service.
The MG15 nA proved far lighter than the renowned MG08. It was not as reliable as the MG08 however. Originally water-cooled the model was subsequently modified to replace the water-jacket with a perforated jacket to facilitate air cooling. It was fed via a 200-round belt up to a theoretical cyclic rate of 500 rounds per minute, although it tended to overheat after just 300 rounds.
The MG15 nA's range was 400m, the weapon being a designated close-range weapon. Often compared to the British Lewis light machine gun, the latter was usually regarded as the better, more reliable weapon.
