I doubt that would happen. The FG42 was just too complex to manufacture for general use instead of niche-stuff like the Fallschirmjager. One must remember that one of the big selling points of the MG42 was its *reduced* production demands over the MG34, a weapon which already used about one of the simplest methods for operation known (Blowback). You've got to be able to build millions of this weapon, not a paltry thousand here and there.

Agreed on all points. I was just trying to answer the question, and pose alternate versions. Of the two options given, BAR or FG42, the latter would be better for general infantry issue.
