Hptm Thiel

#1

Post by Söderbaum » 16 Oct 2010, 19:39

Hi

I wonder if anyone have added information regarding Hptm x Thiel...?

he was the commander of FAA 262 during 1917 and 1918.

Strangely I cant find him in Dienstalterliste from the War, so maybe he was a Württemberger where I dont have any list,
or maybe he was Hptm dL..?

Any kind of hints are welcome

:)

Gunnar,

I am afraid this one is proving rather difficult. I think you are probably correct in assuming he was either d.R or d.L. I have looked at numerous Prussian Hauptmänner in the period of 1915 through 1916 and 1917 and none of them have any affiliation with the Fliegertruppe. I can similarly find no Saxon or Württemberg candidate. Is it possible his name was Thiele?

Regards
Glenn

Hi Glenn

I dont have copies of original documents with his name written..

FAA 262 served within 7 Army during most part of 1918.

As I knew, original documents of this Army regarding flyers can only be found in USA...and I am living in Sweden...and it is not certain that these documents actually have his name printed

However, Thiele is a possibility despite I have his last name Thiel from different sources..

Do you know when he became the commander in 1917. From what I can find on the net there was a Vzfw./Lt. Thiel who served with Jasta 2 between Feb. and Sept. 1917.

Hi Ken

I dont have the exact date when Hptm x Thiel took over the command of FAA 262, but he hold that position at least from Apr 1917.

Yes, it existed at least two more flyers with the name Thiel within the German Air Force, but it seems that it only existed one Hptm.
Your man in Jasta 2 did have an earlier successful service within KG 3/15 and was promoted Lt dR after he left Js 2.
I dont have his first name either..

However it might be possible that they were related..

Thanks Matt

I did not have his signature. Meanwhile I have been able to find some basic info on him as he have an file on ancestry.de.
He was Hptm dR and his first name is Otto. He served nearly the entire War within the Air Force.

Hi Gunnar,
Very interesting. Do you know whether he was a pilot or observer?
Meanwhile I have a note that there was a Lt Thiel (P) serving in either FAA 260 or FAA 262. Do you know which unit?

Thanks,
Matt.

Hi Matt

Otto Thiel was an observer.
