Hi again

I am still hunting added info on Hptm dR Kleiber.
Apparently he had his roots in the Insterburg area, could this help to find him..?

According to the 1911 directory of reserve officers, Kleiber was an Ingenieur in Insterburg. I don't have a prewar Adressbuch for Insterburg, but the 1919 and 1934 ones have a Dipl.-Ing. Kurt Kleiber residing there.

The 20. January 1917 edition of Deutsche Bauzeitung lists a "Kurt Kleiber, Dipl.-Ingenieur von Insterburg" among recipients of the Iron Cross 1st Class. However, I cannot say for sure if this is him. There was another Kurt Kleiber, born 22.10.1893 in Liegnitz, who received the EK1 on 6.11.1916. But he was a Lt.d.R. (22.3.16) in Pi.-Kp. 105; also, he was a student of engineering and did not receive his Diplom until 1922. So the Deutsche Bauzeitung might have mixed the two Kurt Kleiber's up.

But Lt.d.R. d. Pion. Kurt Kleiber is definitely not the one from the Insterburg Adressbuch. The younger Kurt Kleiber was in Breslau in 1919 and in Neumark bei Halle in 1934.

So your Kleiber is Dipl.-Ing. Kurt Kleiber from Insterburg,, but when looking for more information you need to remember that there was another Dipl.-Ing. Kurt Kleiber and not confuse them.

BTW, the other Kleiber in the 1914 rank list, the OLt.d.R. (Gumbinnen) in EisenbR 2, was also an engineer: Reg.-Baumeister Bernhard Kleiber, Hptm.d.R. on 8.5.15.

Excellent info Dave

To have a certain first name and living area are very good hints for me to come further with him.

It seem to exist an Obstlt Kurt Kleiber from WW2 who in the best case is linked to the correct Kurt Kleiber.

Oberstleutnant Kurt Kleiber was the younger one, the Pionieroffizier. He spent the first half of WW2 as Stopi for the Stellv.IV.AK, then was in various technical assignments at OKH and HGr Nord, and was finally in 1945 commander of Pionier-Sonderstab 64.

IR 74 Kurt Kleiber was a Lt.d.R. on 18.6.08. Since he was apparently an East Prussian and an engineer, and IR 74 was in Hannover, he was probably a student at the Technische Hochschule Hannover when he was a one-year volunteer. Around this time, it was about 4-6 years from the volunteer year to commissioning, so he was probably in the regiment in Hannover between 1901-02 and 1903-04. They were usually 20-22 years old when they did their volunteer year, so he was probably born between 1879 and 1883.

You might try contacting the University of Hannover to see if they have a matriculation record or file. Their records do not appear to be online yet: http://www.tib.uni-hannover.de/de/tibub ... aende.html

Thanks again Dave

To exclude him as the later Obstlt also have an historic value for me. Your hint regarding Technische Hochschule in Hannover is very interesting. I have seen some "school" catalogs on-line and they often had information like place of birth and fathers name.
I will try contact them.
