Constantin von Hanneken

I am looking for some information on Constantin Alexander Stephen von Hanneken 1854-1925

My focus is his service in China in the 1880s, especially any information on his involvement with the fortification of Port Arthur (Lüshunkou).

Specific questions:

1. Was he an engineer? My sources are mixed on this.

2. What rank/ranks and dates while in China. I have read captain, major, lieutenant colonel, colonel, and general. Possibly a mix of German rank and rank while in Chinese service.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Would like cites for information if possible.

Thanks! Jeff

Jeff,

he left Prussian service on 29 October 1877 as a Sekonde-Lieutenant in Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr. 27 under less than auspicious circumstances (Entlassung mit schlichtem Abschied). Basically he was cashiered. He held the Chinese rank of General.

Regards
Glenn

Glenn

Thank you for the information. I had read that Hanneken might have been cashier, but the source stated it wasn't likely true. Interesting to see that is is correct.

Doesn't appear he was trained as an engineer. Another piece for the puzzle than needs to be worked out.

Again thanks!
