On page 296 – The Great War Dawning
Kriegsfreiwillige
During the war, a great many young men between the ages of 17 and 20 volunteered for active service before their class was called up. In 1914, there were large numbers of these volunteers, including some men over the age of 20, who were in the untrained Landsturm. These men had been released from their peacetime obligation but volunteered anyway. There was a significant decrease in this number by 1915 and estimates were that approximately only five percent of the later classes were volunteers.
The exact number of these volunteers is somewhat controversial. The number 1,300,000 was repeated in several newspapers including the government’s unofficial voice Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung. This number has been repeated and copied from book to book for years. More than likely the numbers were exaggerated. Prussia reported that 260,000 had attempted to volunteer, but only 144,000 were accepted. There were 32,000 from Bavaria; Württemberg had 8,600; and there were about 10,000 from Saxony. That is a total of about 185,000. The numbers were a classic example of the press building enthusiasm for the war. The newspapers claimed that these came from all social classes, but the evidence surviving from two regiments shows the proletariat represented 33 of 413 volunteers in an artillery regiment and 64 of 450 volunteers in an infantry regiment. Students and the bourgeoisie were heavily represented.

Were these all privates? On promotion would they become "Gefreiter"?

Yes, these were all privates. [...]
WWI isn´t my personal interest but I doubt that a "Ersatz- Rekrut = Reserve Recruit" is a private.

The proportion of the proletariat may vary from unit to unit. It is quite possible that the middle classes are likely to be over represented in volunteer organisations. Kitchener's Army had much fewer metal workers and miners and many many more accountants and actors. Some units may be more fashionable than others.

If I recall correctly The history of Reserve Bavarian Infantry Regiment No 16 analyses Hitler's Regiment and demolishes the idea that these were all student volunteers.

If you're referring to Weber's book, he states that less than 5% were university/high school students, but that 72% of the students in the regiment were "volunteers". He claims that the "great majority of the regiment (more than 70 per cent) had... received no previous military training. However, they were not volunteers at all. They had been members of the Ersatzreserve..." I have not been able to look at the actual Stammrolle, but based on the early casualty lists for the regiment that I've looked at, many of the "Privates" in 1st Company were "Ersatz-Reservists" and a few Infanterist and Kriegsfreiwilliger. The other companies they're listed as "Infanterist". IIRC, Solleder's history lists all "Privates" in the honor roll as "Infanterist".

In regards to student volunteers, one small example I can provide is from the K. Maximilians-Gymnasium in Munich. I have the annual reports for the period covering the war, and here are a few bits of info from the one from 1914/15:

* "Almost all" (nahezu alle)of the 39 graduates from 1913/14 volunteered (some as Fahnenjunker, some as Kriegsfreiwilliger).

* 37 students volunteered during the school year, 22 from the "Oberklasse" (IX.), ten from the VIII., four from the VII., and one from the IV. [Elsewhere, however, it states that there were 28 students in IX., of whom 18 left during the school year, leaving ten names on the class list.]

* The student from class IV, which primarily consisted of boys born 1900 and 1901 (but also one or two from 1898. 1899, and 1902), was Karl Fischer, who joined as a Kriegsfreiwilliger on March 18, 1915, left for the front on May 25 "nach Vollendung des 17. Lebensjahres," and died on June 22. He was the second student from the school to be killed (not including two from the 1913/14 graduates).

Weber sounds like the one I meant. The idea that the Germans who served in 1914 were all Kriegsfreiwilliger is central to the Langemarck myth circulated in Mein Kampf. The memorial at Langemarck includes the names of some 3,000 students who died - which I always thought was quite small compared to the German losses in the area in 1914 and afterwards. I have not seen any statistical analysis but walking around the cemetery, the Kriegsfreiwilliger seems to be a small minority of the 1914 war dead.

The majority of the German troops who attached in Flanders in 1914 were barely trained cannon fodder, but most of them had volunteered. Incidentally the myth about singing the Deutchlandeslieder may have some truth as a was to avoid friendly fire incidents in poor visibility.

I don't think the Kriegsfreiwilliger title appears as part of any NCO rank, but bow to those who kn ow more about this. The term "Kreigs Gefreiter" meant a lot more to Hitler as he was keen to point out that he had volunteered to identify with the heroes of Langemarck. (Theough his unit was more engaged near Gheluveldt and south of the Menin Road)

Much of the modern thought about these volunteers academically is sourced from this book.

I've gone through the honor roll in the Göttinger Kriegsgedenkbuch 1914 - 1918 and extracted the names of the fallen soldiers who were with Res.-Inf.-Regt. 234. The third battalion was raised in the city. There were a fair number of "students" among them, and of those that weren't a number who were not "working class". Many were quite young, being 20/21 or younger. This, of course, is only a small sample, so I'm not using this as a means of "proving" anything.

The Kriegsgedenkbuch has an article about Res.-Inf.-Regt. 234, which focuses primarily on the first year of the war. (3rd battalion received one reinforcing draft from Göttingen in Nov. 1914, thereafter due to attrition the battalion soon lost its personal connection with the city.) The article is on Kindle and is available for free tomorrow (December 19) and on December 30.

There are also two copies of the entire book listed on abebooks, at about 1/5th of what I believe I paid for my copy.
