German Lighthouse in Tanzania

#1

Post by dsmdish » 12 Sep 2010, 09:46

Recenly found a German Lighthouse in Tanzania, former colony of german berfore WWI called German East Afrcia.
This lighthouse built more than 100 years ago and according to the report by British around 1950s' the light house condition is good and main tower is 15m high. But when i found the place, the 15m high tower disappeared and the remains condition is not good.
Any one has more infomation about this light house and the old picture of this lighthouse when it was built. Some parts of this lighthouse was removed by British to Nairobi Railway Museum.
some pictures but do not know how to upload

dsmdish,

I am sorry, but my present location is not Tanzania (unfortunately)

A good source for the search of old pictures (maybe with the lighthouse at Kigamboni)
http://www.ub.bildarchiv-dkg.uni-frankf ... frame.html

STEP I
1) Click: Thesaurus at: Region
2) Click: The `plus´ at: Afrika
3) Click: The `plus´ at: Deutsch Afrika
4) Click: DOA

STEP II
5) Click: Thesaurus at: Sachgruppe
6) Click: The `plus´ (maybe) Architektur or Verkehr.

With my slow Internet connection I am not be able to check these interest folders for this case.

Cheers
Holger

The ruins are situated on Ras Kanzi, a promontory south of Ras Kimbiji.

According to the ‘Africa Pilot’ (1923), on Ras Kanzi “a fixed white light, visible 14 miles, is exhibited, at an elevation of 62 feet above high water, from a quadrangular-shaped tower, 31 feet in height”.

Later the construction of the Ras Kanzi lighthouse could well have changed, but one may question its active status.
