Better late than never. I was researching something else and came across a photo of Lettow-Vorbeck showing all his awards. He never upgraded his Ordenschnalle, so all his WWI awards are worn separately from the pre-war ones Glenn has already listed.

They are the aforementioned Iron Crosses, 1st and 2nd Class, and Pour le Merite with Oakleaves, as well as the Crown Order 2nd Class with Swords, the Bremen Hanseatenkreuz and the black Wound Badge.

Regards,
Dave

Glenn and Dave,

Thanks for the help. This man has intrigued me for some time. I ran across the same pic a few days ago and was going to repost myself. Dave beat me to it. Thanks again.

Can anybody explain why Lettow is mentioned as "Char. GM z.V." on the Tannenberg list? I don't know of any z.V.-Stellung, and if he had one, he should have been Char. GL. It would also have been the only case where someone was elevated two ranks on the Tannenberg list.

For anyone not familiar with this, the book "The Germans who Never Lost" is about the best on the subject.

Absolutely excellent, in my opinion. My review of it on www.germancolonailuniforms.co.uk-

"My Reminiscences of East Africa" by General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck
(Published by Battery Press in English)

As you would expect from the commander in the field, von Lettow-Vorbeck knows an awful lot about the campaign. In this book he tells the story of the First World War in East Africa from the German perspective.

He seems to paint quite an objective picture of events, admitting his own mistakes, heaping praise on his junior officers and not appearing too judgemental on his opponents consistently poor performance. He goes into some detail on the battles, German forces involved and their relative weaknesses and supply problems.

Many more recent authors may have studied the campaign from all angles but none can have the same insight as von Lettow-Vorbeck.

Cheers

My questions are:

1.) Did both photos show the same scene?

2.) Are the photos taken before or afterwards the signature of the peace agreement?
