Sorry, nothing to do with Africa. Go much farther north!

Most important with regards to colonialism is probably his name-giving of (by him) explored areas...

It's not August Heinrich Petermann is it? The Arctic cartographer?

Close indeed Chris, although not Petermann.

I will add, the "mann" in question was also a captain and named his ship after a large green island.

Carl Koldewey led the 1868 expedition in a ship called Grönland... is that the green island you mentioned?

Carl Koldewey then captained the Germania on the and Paul Hegemann captained the Hansa on the 1869 expedition.... is that the "Mann" you mention?

Looking at the picture compared to others, I'd say it was Hegemann...

Checked the facts and must say they are similar in some aspects...
Grönland is the name of the ship, but apparently several ships have
had the same name. A little later in time you'll come across another
and fairly bigger ship... an "Auxiliarsegler" .

Our man was also interested in the warmer seas/continents and also travelled in
warmer waters. Some more hints: Papua New Guinea, a mountain, a famous institute,
a Kaiser, Russia, German New Guinea Company, Otto Finsch, the Samoa,
Neumayer and much more...

Welcome back Polar Bear!

I've not heard back from Waleed but it does look like you've found the right man, so it's your turn to give us a question...

Cheers

Thanks for the hint about "my" country that's what got it for me! Actually my country is Wales and we don't have any colonies unless you count Y Wladfa in Patagonia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_Patagonia .

But the Welsh did do their bit against the German colonies in the First World War... which was the only Regiment of the British Army to fight at Tsingtao in 1914?

Cheers
Chris
