There are not many original buildings left in Berlin where you can walk through the very rooms where history was made. Last month in Berlin, we revisited the Bendlerblock, the former War Ministry. This was where Hitler's invasions plans of the West and East came together. It was also where, in 1944, Claus Von Stauffenburg and his fellow conspirators launched their attempted coup of July 20th.
It's a very special place, knowing you are standing in the very room where so much drama took place and outside in the courtyard where Stauffenberg and others were shot.

I'm not convinced that Hitler spent a lot of time in the Bendlerblock but nevertheless if you were in Stauffenberg's office in 2010 and were to look down, you would have seen this design in the parquetry. In 2015, the parquetry had been replaced. Still, when you go there it's worth remembering that there were (I'm told) gunfights in the corridors on July 20th.
