Re: The official AHF Resistance Movements quiz thread
Wasn't Milorg the military resistance and civillian resistance was directed and planned by KK (co-ordinating committee) and Kretsen (=circle?)? (edit: IIRC there was also a military intelligence branch called XU, although old age is creeping up with me so I could be getting confused )
Re: The official AHF Resistance Movements quiz thread
Thanks Robb. There's a very good museum (at least there was!) to the Norwegian resistance movements in Oslo which is worth a visit if anybody gets chance to have a few days in Norway.
My question:
How were banknotes and resistance linked in the Channel Islands during ww2?

Re: The official AHF Resistance Movements quiz thread
Well, Zebedee, while I join everyone else in looking for the link between banknotes and CI resistance (over four months now and looking) let me point you to the Jersey postage stamps of April 1941, one of which contained, microscopically, the letters AAAA, which are taken to mean (at least by the more classically educated natives) AD AVERNUM, ADOLPH ATROX ("to hell, dreadful Adolf").
Further, in the rather different June 1943 issue, the 3d value contains among its decorative curlicues a supposed GR, a reference to its designer's loyalty to the British king. I say supposed because, since the curlicues are mirror images of one another, you could say it was stretching a point.
Now, surely your banknote question refers to something similar?

Re: The official AHF Resistance Movements quiz thread
Hi idgreenwood, it is indeed. 1941 was the year of the 'V' campaign, initiated originally by Victor de Laveleye on 14 January 1941 in a broadcast to Belgium by the BBC. The Jersey artist Edmund Blampied was commissioned to design a set of stamps and banknotes for Jersey, and in both there are hidden signs of resistance using the idea of the V for victory and other more traditional British symbols to display loyalty to crown and country. The 6d note is one of the more obvious as it is designed so that when folded in half there is a distinctive V upon it. This site has pictures of the note, although there was a site with the full set which identified the less obvious ones, but sadly www.germannotes.com no longer seems to exist even in cached form : http://www.jeron.je/thatwasjersey/people.html
Over to you, and apologies for taking a couple of weeks to pass the baton.

Hint: A Swedish-Danish TV-series was produced in 1985 about her, attempts were made to stop it being shown on Danish TV. In the series the role of Admiral Canaris was played by Anton Diffring.

Hi Marcus,
Jane Horney? I eventually managed to find Anton Diffring - never knew he was in Where Eagles Dare, one of my favourite war movies. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood are much better know here.
