Italian troops to Crete.

Hello to all :D, a little report about the Italian troops in Crete in May 1941.............

Italian troops to Crete.

The Supreme Command issued the directive (following Mussolini’s orders) to collaborate with the occupation of Crete, therefore on May 27 of 1941 at 18:00 hours, a light convoy carried 2,685 men (Chafarro Regiment), 205 mules, 13 tanks and 4 vehicles weighed anchor of the Island of Rhodes.

The convoy included about 15 small boats and fishing boats, escorted by a destroyer, 4 torpedo boats and 6 speedboats. At night it sighted land in Scarpanto and by the following morning it determined course to Crete disembarking in the Gulf of Sitia.

The decisive contribution of the Italian forces to the conquest of Crete. In spite of the actions of the English Navy, the Italian Navy transported to Crete a motorized force.

Tigre,

Very interesting photos and a brief history of this Italian section sent Crete. I noticed the guys in the photos look like MVSN troops. Would you know how long their deployment to Crete was? The reason why I ask is because during the late war regime of the RSI 1943-44,(when the MVSN became Guardia Nazionale Rupublicana;GNR) there was a unit of "Black Shirts" stationed there. I am wondering if these are the same men.

the Milizia men in the photo ( 3 only , an officier and two enlisted) are a very small unit ( a "squadra " or a platoon , i don't remember exactly) from the Legion " Conte Verde" that is the territorial Legion of the "Dodecaneso" , the italian possession of Rodi ( rhodes) and eleven smoller islands near it . The others men are infantry from "Regina" division in garrison on Rodi ( note the whithe collar tabs).
