Thanks Nono

The article basically uses
Buche e croci nel deserto
as it main source so no new info on theattack. it does tell us th eoficers who volunteered for this mission.

Tony

Yes I basically agree. In all, the actions of the II/61°on the 17th was a non-attack. It would help if we could find a source that could tell us where the higher HQs thought units were located on the afternoon/evening of the 16th. That would help understand what actions were expected on the 17th.

Here is an account of the events from the published diaries of Major Schraepler:

a translation of
Mon Père, l’Aide de Camp du Général Rommel, Éditions Privat, 2007

The 2 motorcycle companies mentionned here and elsewhere in the thread were 4./K.B.15 and 5./K.B.15 which had just arrived in front of Tobruk having landed in Tripoli on 11 April.

That's a good book!
The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41
